I think the best way to design a logo like that is to use a decent vector-based drawing software you could try Incscape, it's free , but you can cook up something decent with the paths-tool in programms like PS too or GIMP if you don't want to buy/pirate PS . I'd recommend playing around with the software of your choice for a bit and see what you can pull of with it.

yeah it's fine. if you dont publish on a site you're being paid for, it's ok;
poorly drawn lines and dinosaur comics, to name a few, dumped some of their best stuff and it's fine
