Life is like a box of chocolates- at first you go through it really fast, and then at the end you savor the last few pieces wondering where the rest went. I couldn't think of anything funny, so here is something mildly depressing.

Fat people are the solution to our healthcare cost problems. We should be encouraging it. They die faster and cost less.

Nope. While obese people live shorter lives, they cost a ton more in medical care over the length of their lives than a typical non-obese or even slightly overweight person. The amount of surgeries they need for the extra weight they put on their bones, the high cholesterol, heart attacks, diabetes, and the hospital trips that are associated cost many tens of billions annually.

It's a growing problem

That's a commonly held misconception. People like to think it; but when they actually measure it - nope.

The lifetime costs were in Euros:

Healthy: 281,000
Obese: 250,000
Smokers: 220,000

Does it measure lost productivity from sick days and generally being unhealthy and unfocused? I remember watching Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and the guy said he boosted sales by like 200% just by being healthier. Eben Pagan said the same thing, and so did Tony Robbins.

You'd figure lost productivity and sick days would make them an economical nightmare. I personally know plenty of companies that will outright refuse work to fat people for these reasons alone. Plus they cost more in gas for both automobiles and planes, and often are buying items that are less environmentally friendly.

You seem to be trying hard to find any reason to justify the idea that fat people are bad.

A fat person would require more fuel to fly them the same distance...but the same is true for tall people or muscular people. And the difference is going to be insignificant compared to the lifestyle choices. I was 68-70kg right out of college and got a job as an IT consultant. I spent like six months flying from Chicago to San Diego and working M-Th, 10 hours per day. And I know plenty of fat people who don't fly at all.

When you talk about cars, the weight of the person is insignificant compared to the vehicle itself. A fat person driving an F250 is still a lot lighter than a skinny guy driving an F350.

Fat people average four more sick days per year, in the US when compared to healthy people. But you know who else takes more time off? Women. And parents.

I'm not trying my damnedest to put a label on fat people as inherently being "good" or "bad", concepts that honestly don't even exist, philosophically. I was asking for more data, is all. So women and parents take more time off- good. We're getting somewhere. Do they take as much time off as a fat person does? Every study I've personally ever read has stated that the lost productivity and other variety of factors make fat people an economic nightmare, especially when considering people who get so fat that they take up 2 seats on an airplane, or handicapped spaces, etc. A store would require much less space if it didn't have to cater to people in rascals, etc.

So to have one guy on FJ tell me that he's 100% sure that literally everything I've ever read regarding the obese population I share the planet with, after 15 years of research into the diet and health community- color me skeptical. However, I keep an open mind. I didn't say "ur wrong fgt", I asked for more data. So do you have any more data about the total energy consumption of these people and how much that converts to dollars versus our healthier population?
