Sorry but you're wrong, I'm a violinist myself and this is way more than scales, just because the melody is fast doesn't mean is just scale. If you're not able to appreciate the melody within this cool madness try to get away from pop for some years

I'm a guitarist, and not really good, but dude I don't think you know what ur talking about, this solo is originally from jens johansson, a world famous keyboardist known to introduce beautiful melodies in fast playing. 0.49 "lick" is a great example of this, it's not a pattern repetition, same with most of fast parts are creatively written, you should know the different between just fast playing and original/beautiful fast playing. you need to play fast if you want to express certain kind of things, this is a fact.

(violinist here, made an account not to be confused with other anonymous users)

if it lacks soul it's your opinion but I have been playing violin for 13 years and my ear is trained enough to tell how creatively this is, even I don't listen to much metal, this is one of the most beautiful melodies I've heard lately and an example of not having speed limitations, the patterns are original and it combines fast with slow and it changes the scale/tonality many times as well as part of the harmonic progression, you should try to listen more carefully.

Guitarist here. My specialty lies in soloing, mainly freestyle soloing. It's impossible to freestyle a solo that sounds good without repetitious patterns and techniques. The difference is how you use them. I don't know if this solo is a freestyle or cover, but there is definitely skill that went into the making of that solo. Yes, it does use scales and arpeggios, but I'd like you to show me any solo worth mentioning that didn't. Slash uses a **** ton of arpeggios, scales, and repeated patterns in his playing, along with Zack Wylde, Kirk Hammet, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana, Yngwie Malmsteen, Jimmy Page; shall I go on? The techniques illustrated in this solo are all used correctly and convey what the musician was trying to say with that solo. You also have to look at the limitations of the instrument, unlike a real guitar, there are many things that can't be done on that instrument: bends, hammer ons, pulloffs, most chords, tone control (how you play the note), etc...

Then what makes a great solo to you? For the limitations of the instrument along with the message the solo is sending, it is pretty damn awesome.

He's not questioning the skill required in playing the piece. Rather, he is stating that in his opinion it's rather... uninspiring, which I agree with. It's fast, it's technical, but that's about it.

The thing is that everyone says that a piece is uninspiring just because it's fast. And he was indeed question this because it included scales / arpeggios, this would make impossible for a solo to be cool being fast. It's the same story than always, people used to 4/4 and slow radio songs not being able to get the emotion from a more elaborated melody.

Lol you have no idea, this is freaking Elysium keyboard solo, within Top 3 Stratovarius solos and probably the hardest one ."I don't think this is hard to play" I dare you to find any other one guy in youtube that does it well or is it able to play it. I love metal (being a girl yes) and I know what I'm talking about. "Easily impressed"? I'm sure you are daily impressed by much easier things that don't require half as effort than this, music technique is so underrated.

The content: Just speed.

But of course, everyone else is portraying it like I said everything he does is just speed. The only three songs I've seen of his (before watching the piano song below) were literally just speed on complicated scales.

Thing is that the content is NOT just speed, this solo ranked top in many music magazines since Elysium was released, it's an example of Paganini, Bach influences in modern instruments and it's not a bunch of scales but beautifully designed melodies not conventional at all, you're just saying the typical "fast melody is just nonsense speed" when speed is just another resource to express something through music, a fast melody can be as beautiful as an slow one, and this is an example, like chopin, liszt, etc. are.

P.S: that guy has much more piano songs than other videos, he doesn't "show off"
