It's a pretty simple trick. Notice how the numbers go odd, even, odd, even. Hence you will never land on the one he removes as you would require an extra move to get there.

Guys, this isn't that hard.
No matter where you move, when you get to each square you've either moved an odd or even number of times
If his total count is even, he removes an odd numbered square, and vice versa
Because of the order in which he removes the squares, you're forced down to the smiley face

He's just making sure you'll be on a square an even/odd number of moves from the start, then just called the one of the opposite kinds of square.
For example: He gets you to move off the start square, then move 7 times, landing you on a square an even number of moves from the start, then gets rid of the house, which is an odd number of moves from the start.
