At Calgary Expo 2013 Wil Wheaten was asked by a fan to tell her
newborn daughter why being a nerd is awesome.
His answer couldn' t have been better.
Hi Violet, My name is Wil Wheaten, its 2013 and you' just recently
joined us on planet earth, so welcome.
I' m an actor, I' m a writer, and I' m a dad, and your mother asked me to
tell you why it' s awesome to be a nerd, and that' s an easy thing for me
to do because that' s who I am.
I don' t know what the world' s going to be like by the time that you are
old enough to understand this. I don' t know what it' s going mean to be
a nerd when you are a young woman.
For me when laas growing up being a nerd meant
I liked things that were a little weird,
that took a lot of effort to understand and appreciate.
It meant that I loved science;
it meant that I loved playing
board games and reading books,
and really understanding what
went on in the world instead of
just riding the planet thru space.
And when I was a little boy people
really teased us about that...
and made us feel wrong for loving
those things.
and the world has changed a lot. And I think a lot of us have realized
that in being a nerd, or being a geek...
it' s not about what you love;
it' s about how you love it.
so there' s going to be a thing in your life that you love, and I don' t
know what it' s going to be.
It might be sports. it might be science, it might be reading, it might be
Fashion design, it might be building things, it might be telling stories or
taking pictures. It doesn' t matter what it is...
The way you love that, and the way that you find other
people who love it the way you do is what makes being
a nerd awesome.
A. iimm“
POLICE 'W' BOX
The defining characteristic of us. “the people in the room (camera pans to
the audience with cheers)
The defining characteristic that ties us all together
is that we love things.
And some of us love Firefly, and some of us love Game of Thrones, these
are things you' ll be able see in your history books (laughs)
Some of us love star trek, or star wars, or ammo, or games, or fantasy, or
science fiction.
Some of us love completely different things, but we all love those things so
much that we travel for thousands for miles (which IS probably easy for you,
but we' re still on fossil fuels)... we some from all over, in some cases all over
the world, so that we can be around people who love the things we love, the
way we love them, and that' s why being a nerd is awesome.
And don' t ever let anyone tell you that that thing that you love is a
thing you can' t love.
Don' t ever let anyone tell you that you can' t love that "that' s for boys"
you have to love this, cause you are a girl, you find the things
that you love and you love them the most that
you can.
and listen this is really important...
I want you to be honest, honorable, and kind. And I
want you to work hard, because everything worth
doing is hard...
and I want you to be awesome.

The ******* crash is coming guys, and whil weaton is it's bloody herald.
You think the baby boomers filing divorce left and right was bad? Imagine a generation of kids that think being an outcast is cool.
They are all going to WANT to be a ******* reject. At first, this seems fine, but you have to understand the long term effects.
People are going into the world of engineering, science, medicine, all thinking that's it's "cool". Problem is, it's not. I'm not saying there isn't cool doctors or engineers or that all their work is boring, but just tell me if you think engineering is easy.
See any good architecture recently? Want to take a guess at how many long, dreary hours of work went into it?
Science was never meant to be a "cool" thing, it was an outcast thing by necessity. The people working in the field did it out of love or curiosity, not because of chicks or money.
tldr: Whil weaton is going to kill that girl. Not surprising though, he's also a die hard tublr fanatic.

That happened last generation too with the grunge/goth phase, and the generation before that with the punk rockers, and the generation before that with hippies, and the generation before that with disco, and the generation before that with swingers, and the generation before that with the "cool cat beatnicks" (who basically invented Jazz by the way). It happens literally every generation. Teens and children want to be different than their parents, so they rebel and become outcasts, then get their **** together and work through it. I'm not saying I like it, I hate those obnoxious "oh look at me I'm so unique by trying to be different like everyone else" kids as much as the next guy, but at least for once the outcasting is in the name of something even slightly educational. Personally, I hate tumblr fanatics, I hate fangirls, I hate all of the people that stand for "OMG I'm such a nerd, lol" but to say that its the downfall of society is silly, this has happened dozens of times before, and it will happen again next generation too. The reason we don't hear about how many people thought it was "cool" is because they don't write any of that **** down. So while I agree with your opinion on people like that being utterly undesirable in everyday life, I'm pretty sure once most of them get past 25, they get their **** straight. If you don't actually love science, you don't get very far in college, same goes for any major.

It seems to me the only people that are 'proud to be a nerd' or whatever are only into it for attention and not because they actually like those things.
Just like the casual gamer that is so proud to be a 'gamer' because he plays Angry Birds and COD/Battlefield/whatever.

I've never understood why people strive so hard to fit social norms and why they restrict themselves on what they are allowed to enjoy and what they can't enjoy. Seriously, do what you like in your lives (so long as it abides by our laws of course) and if people are going to pick on you for it, avoid them. They have absolutely no reason to be doing so and are just being inconsiderate assholes. They may have their own problems and reasons to bully people, but who cares? At the end of the day, you're the one enjoying your own life and doing what you like.

What people don't realize, is he isn't talking about what we consider nerdy things. He's talking about finding something you're passionate about. And sticking with that. I remember lurking on here, and reading about a guy that had no friends, but he bought a car, and joined a local club. He made so many friends, and changed, into a much happier person. That's what he's saying here. As long as you love what you're doing, it doesn't matter if it's cool or not. It's about truly being happy. I'm a ****** artist, but I love doing it. We can all do with a bit of happiness in regard to what we enjoy.
