It's not final fantasy
it's Dragon Quest 1+2 on the SNES

I heard that game was terrible. Is it?
User avatar #32 to #28 - siveon (04/22/2014) [-]
No, it's a classic JRPG series that does nothing spectacular yet still retains it's likability by always being a fun adventure. It's well polished, easy to get into, and I can't imagine why anyone would call it terrible. Mediocre or passé, maybe, but I love it.

It's not like any modern JRPG though, I'll give it that. So if you want some in-depth combat system, or a complex story you're not gonna find it here.

Ah here it is I think Dragon Quest 1 - The Angry Video Game Nerd

That... Isn't the famous AVGN we know.

But IMO it's a spectacular game, and it's the game final fantasy was inspired by. In one of the versions of the first final fantasy, it pays homage to Dragon Warrior (Now it's Quest, but eh) by making a grave that says "Here lies Eldrick" (I think I spelt the name wrong) who is a sort-of main character in the storyline of dragon warrior/quest.

I think I just went full fanboy a bit, but it's a good game. Takes a bit of random exploring, but it's good.

You're right it isn't avgn. I messed that up.

He did pass over the game in one episode (sauce appreciated if anyone has it) where he was talking about the feeling of "where do I go" in video games; he used a clip of Dragon Warrior/Quest on the NES as a example.

So I guess your not completely incorrect, but somewhat incorrect.

I know it's kinda late, but hey -for future reference:

Sequelitis - Mega Man Classic vs. Mega Man X

(it's about 11:50 in)

Oh, right, thanks. Thought it was AVGN for some reason. You are today's sourcerer.

He definitely reviewed a game called Dragon's Lair. That might be what I was thinking of.

I'm with ya. I actually never played 1&2, but I plan to. My favorites are 5 and 8. I think 5 has a bit of a better story, but the music, graphics, and somewhat more detailed battle system make 8 good.

I just could have sword that AVGN reviewed it and usually those games have some major flaw that makes the games almost unplayable.
User avatar #42 to #40 - siveon (04/22/2014) [-]
Okay then.
User avatar #55 to #42 - hawaiianhappysauce (04/23/2014) [-]
lol Sword... I meant sworn.

its been awhile and i cant be sure

but i think that's either final fantasy 3, 4, or 5

my bet's on 4
User avatar #5 to #4 - Antiquisition (04/22/2014) [-]
aaaaaaah, of course, it's the old version.
i've played all the final fantasies, but i've always played the remakes
#6 to #5 - AnonymousDonor (04/22/2014) [-]
you mean for like the 3ds or whatever?
or would these remakes be included in the ROM versions i downloaded and played on my laptop?

not that it matters much lol i never was able to sustain my attention through 3, 4, or 5 - oddly enough those were the only three fantasies that never became final
User avatar #7 to #6 - Antiquisition (04/22/2014) [-]
No, mostly for the Gameboy Advance.
FF5 is probably my all time favourite Final Fantasy, I just love the job system.
#8 to #7 - AnonymousDonor (04/22/2014) [-]
yeah? like i said i dont remember much about it but in terms of the 2Ders my favorite was definitely FF6 by a long shot

and while it is better than some 3Ders, 10 and 8 will always win out in my opinion
User avatar #9 to #8 - irbidoof (04/22/2014) [-]
This actually looks like dragon warrior 1 or 2...
#10 to #9 - AnonymousDonor (04/22/2014) [-]
possibly, but im almost positive now its FF4 - i remember the kings tower having the same layout and the main guy is dressed exactly like Cecil
User avatar #11 to #10 - irbidoof (04/22/2014) [-]
No I'm actually playing 4 right now, cecil is dark purple...

Dragon warrior and FF used the same type of style for their castles..

I've been looking at some of the old screenshots of DW and FF and this looks closer to DW...
User avatar #14 to #11 - arbyworks (04/22/2014) [-]
This looks nothing like Final Fantasy IV, V or VI; it's also too detailed to be IV or V and doesn't have the same sprite style as VI so it's definitely Dragon Quest.
#13 to #11 - AnonymousDonor (04/22/2014) [-]
well dark purple is not a far cry from dark blue
even physically speaking, theyre no more than 70nm apart

but ill defer this one to you, as i have no knowledge of dragon warrior
any good?
User avatar #30 to #13 - irbidoof (04/22/2014) [-]
Ah you're not missing much unless you're into clueless questing and grinding your balls off...

Well, have you ever seen sequelitis by egoraptor? Specifically the Megaman one? About 11 minutes in he shows some footage of Dragon Warrior while screaming "WHAT DO I DO? WHERE DO I GO?" which kinda sums up most early RPGs, but especially DW1.

That being said, DW1 is pretty significant (as far as the history of RPGS go), so give it a go if you're feeling like indulging in some old school **** . Don't be afraid to defer to a guide or something, because it's fairly easy to end up aimlessly wandering around.

proof of my hella legitness I ****** love ff, but I've played some DQ in my time
