Egads! Our colonial friends, fellow union members, bested nations and the rebels across the pond are quite rowdy today, what?

Did even half a month pass since this was on top 10 posts? And still the same discussions in the comments, why do people even vote up reposts like this? I have nothing against older and funny reposts, but this is neither of that..

Why is everyone so sore of England? Sure, they had an empire.
But so did France (many of them), and Spain, and Germany (or rather, than Germanic states), Hungary, Austria, Austria and Hungary together, Sweden, Denmark, Turkey, Greece, Crete and Egypt, among others.

And most of those invaded England in the first place and England just had to roll over and let it happen because they were so week at the time.

European countries made England what it is.

Denmark... Empire.. Really?
User avatar #303 to #291 - Crusader ONLINE (10/15/2013) [-]
Eh, closer to a cluster of fiefdoms that were fought over.

How the hell do you think they got Greenland? Also they controlled Sweden and Finland for a time. Sweden be like " **** this" and took Finland and left, going to Estonia and Latvia (who were, at the time, under Poland's rule) for help. Sweden left with half cutsody.
Sweden also declared that, at the time, Finland was not a country, just a part of Sweden.

Then Russia took Finland and Sweden was pissed. At the time, it was the coldest winter for 100 years, and Denmark (and Norway) declared war on Sweden. Sweden did even have any naval strength, so Swedish troops marched down and around, through Netherlands, expecting to meet hostile troops because of the Dutch and Danish trading friendship at the time.
I dunno what happened there, but Sweden got through, and lacking any ships, marched the army across the frozen sea to Denmark.

Many Danish pants were soiled that day.
User avatar #367 to #297 - suckittrebek (10/15/2013) [-]
Indeed.. But then lets define an empire.
Because if my memory serves me correct (which it might not, since I enjoy the occasional beer) - Denmark "got" Greenland because Erik Den Røde (Eric The Red) (who was actually Norwegian) discovered Greenland - and it sorta was, theirs.. Like.. the US..

For me, Britain was an empire, in the sense of Naval-power..
Rome was an empire, when thinking about the amount of (current) countries it possessed..
User avatar #379 to #367 - Loppytaffy (10/15/2013) [-]
Denmark had an Empire. Anything by the name of Kingdom usually is/was.
User avatar #398 to #379 - suckittrebek (10/16/2013) [-]
Well, Denmark has Monarchy.. Which is technically a kingdom..
Does that mean that we are still an empire?
User avatar #399 to #398 - Loppytaffy (10/16/2013) [-]
but Denmark used to own many countries; including this quiant little colony they liked to call England. Their settlement was called Jorvik. Which was localised as York.
User avatar #404 to #399 - suckittrebek (10/16/2013) [-]
We owned A BIT of England - not the entire country..
There's a bit difference..

Besides.. Many countries.. Norway, Sweden, West Indian Islands.. And then what?
User avatar #406 to #404 - Loppytaffy (10/17/2013) [-]
The whole of England; hense the amount of Germanic words in the language. It just so happens that the biggest settlement was York.
And I dunno, still Denmark had an empire.
User avatar #407 to #406 - suckittrebek (10/18/2013) [-]
We did not own THE WHOLE of England, that is bs..
User avatar #408 to #407 - Loppytaffy (10/18/2013) [-]
At the time, England did not have any real power or organised military to fight back with. It wasn't very untied, so it was pretty easy to rule.
User avatar #409 to #408 - suckittrebek (10/18/2013) [-]
As that may be, that still doesn't count as owning the entire country of England..
User avatar #410 to #409 - Loppytaffy (10/18/2013) [-]
If that's what you want to believe, so be it.

Is that the flag of the Cook Islands or something?
I know there's an ex-empire territory that has a flag like that...Perhaps with les strips and minus the NI cross.
#289 to #281 - tonygd (10/15/2013) [-]
Its the ensign of the East India Company

These days England doesn't really care about who hates them.
We have declared war on so many countries throughout history and taken control of them so that it doesn't really make much of a difference. Nobody likes being controlled and likes the thought of being free.

every country in red has been declared war on by England
User avatar #294 to #289 - Loppytaffy (10/15/2013) [-]
There are only 22 countries that England has not invaded (or rather, put hostile soliders on the territory- invading defenseless island isn't really an invasion at all, just a takeover).
Sweden, Belarus and Luxemburg are three of them.

I dunno if this makes me proud to be English.
User avatar #295 to #294 - tonygd (10/15/2013) [-]
I say meh. No reason to be ashamed. We did what we did.
not bad for a small island that used to be invaded by everyone else.
User avatar #299 to #295 - Loppytaffy (10/15/2013) [-]
I guess the smaller are the fiestier. Hense Denmark's ******* contest with Sweden.

Man, I don't care. I'm proud to be British. Not English- British. That includes the Scots and the Welsh and **** too. You're all mah ****** and I love you.

I don't think EVERYONE hates us though. Scotland and Ireland do because of the geographical location (same reason Canada hate US etc... it's a harmless rivalry these days).

Germany hate us because although we were with other countries when we won WW2, we are the only ones who CONSTANTLY remind them everytime we play them at the football.

That's football guys. I'm a season ticket holder at Derby County FC and for 90 minutes every saturday, I have a strong hatred for whoever we are playing. When the game is over, I couldn't give a **** . Passionate sports fans is all this really is.
User avatar #284 to #243 - Loppytaffy (10/15/2013) [-]
I dunno, we tried to breed out the Scots, then hung, drew and quartred William Wallace. I understand them being mad.
Ireland, well we were dicks who used the power of Northern Ireland to put pressure on the Republic.

As for the references to WWII in football; England's team once did a Nazi salute when playing in Germany. There's a picture of it.

The rest of EU can go **** themselves because whatever England has done to them, they stared! France invaded, Sweden invaded, Italy (as Rome) invaded, Germany (as Saxony) invaded. Don't get me wrong; I love the culture England has as a result, it makes languages interesting and history even moreseo, but European countries have no right hating us just for getting our own back for centuries of being us over and royally ******* us.
User avatar #356 to #284 - fukkendragonite (10/15/2013) [-]
The salute thing was in 1938, before anyone knew what was happening there.
User avatar #357 to #356 - fukkendragonite (10/15/2013) [-]
But I pretty much agree with the rest of it. I'd say that history is best left in the past and you gotta forgive and forget, but I understand it

Derby fan? or Dundee fan? I know he was popular at Dundee. I can see why, great player. Bit unfortunate for him that he's arrived at the club this year, just got used to the new boss, and then the boss gets the sack. And now he's injured for 6 weeks with the injury he had at the end of last season, which is recurring now...

Poor guy's getting it tough.
User avatar #339 to #278 - vwanyama (10/15/2013) [-]
Celtic fan, always liked Russel though.. i wish we went for him.

i think the reason the scottish and irish hate you is a bit more than location. and germany hates you because youre one of the countries that put them in a position where marks were being used as building blocks
User avatar #280 to #255 - fukkendragonite (10/15/2013) [-]
True I suppose. There's a lot of history in it. But I don't think EVERYONE hates us. That was my point.
