a) 50 x 50 =?
b) 10050=50 and 10050=50
c) so. 50+50=100, and a = 100_

This is just stupid and a completely useless way to solve multiplication problems.
1) just about everyone here has access to calculators which can literally determine the answer in seconds
2) assuming you had ANY sort of education in elementary school arithmetic, doing multiplication of large numbers should not be too difficult.
3) try solving a problem like 47 x 66 with this method and tell me it's quicker to solve it that way
4) pic related: method I learned in school

The image works of the following method.
97*96<=>(100(10097))*(100(10096))<=>(1003)*(1004)=100*100100*43*100+3*4
This last bit can be shortened to: 100*(10034)+3*4
The underscored part is the red part of the image and the nonunderscored part is the blue part of the image.
This method can be used for any two numbers, but as shown in other comments it's not effective unless it's a high two ciphered number. In my opinion this method is a mere curiosity.

I tried this out with 45 x 75. I got 201375 when really its 3375.

I am pretty sure 86*80 does not equal 66280 (14+20=34 10034=66, 14*20=280)

well if you have like 47*68 you'll get that 10047=53 and 10068 is 32. you'll add them together to make the sum 85. now you just have to solve the simple multiplication 53*32 in your head, or repeat this process.
this thing is only smart if the number you have to multiply are close to 100 or 0 so you can do the multiplication in your head

now do 56*72, see as difficult as the starting problem
this trick works only works well for both numbers close to 100,1000...
so not that useful
better is to do 50*70+6*70+50*2+6*2
