When you pot the black you win, but if you pot the white at the same time, you lose the game.

If you sink the cue ball while shooting at the eight ball, you lose.

He made an amazing shot, but didn't plan ahead, so he still lost.

If you scratch (pocket the cueball) after your last colored ball, you lose. Doesn't matter if you correctly pocket the 8-ball first.

In snooker it's just a 7 point penalty awarded to the other player. You often don't even have to pot all the balls to win a frame, just have a big enough points lead. He didn't automatically lose, it just worked out that way.

Okay, you're all wrong. This isn't pool, that isn't an 8-ball. They're playing snooker. In snooker the black ball is worth 7 points. So if he had potted the ball without a foul he would have won the game (frame) 62-57. But since he fouled by potting the white, he didn't get the points and his opponent was awarded 4 points for the foul. Making the final score 61-54.

it was 55-57, the black ball is 7 points, so that would be 62-57 if he didn't get the white ball in.

But since he did he lost 55-64 (since you get either 4 points or the ball's value, whether is higher)

More accurately, in this instance, if you sink the white ball on your last shot, you lose.

even more accurately: there are several ways to play billiards, and in most ways, if a player strikes the 8 ball, then scratches (puts the cue ball in the hole), then he loses. It doesn't matter on which turn it happens.

There are also several variants of scratching. If you don't strike a single ball, then you must hit at least three sides of the table (or one side once and the other twice), otherwise you scratch. If you hit some other player's ball before your own, you scratch. If, however, you still get your ball in a pocket, it becomes only a scratch where your turn is over. Again, there are MANY ways to play billiards, and each group can make up their own rules and such.

Damn, I think I want to play billiards now.

I play billiards with all these rules. Except the one about the 3 sides. I only play with one side. Also, if at any point during the game, where no player has any balls left, only black, then a scratch by downing white is a loss.
