I'd actually say Final Fantasy X
decent graphics decent gameplay and decent story, it would help introduce you into the kind of game FF is.
and it'd keep you more engaged compared to others (personally i'd not have bothered with earlier final fantasies if i played them first)
So go for FFX
or XII although it has alot for you to grasp.

I started with 6 and it's my favorite, it's called 3 in US for whatever reason. You could also try 7 or 10. It all depends on the characters you want in it.
if theres a game you are looking for that is not on the xbox 360, ps3 or Wii U you will probably be able to emulate it if it was console exclusive though you can buy them on the Wii
The stories don't connect and the style differs between games.
I know they don't, but they're numbered for a reason, it's not like "Hey guys I'm gonna read A song of ice and fire which one should I start?" they're not numbered and they each have different names. That doesn't happen on FInal Fantasy, there's Final Fantasy 1, 2, 3 .... you get it.
I know it's a valid question, I also gave a valid answer and I'm pretty sure the Wikipedia page for Final Fantasy probably has all of the games listed on it. Starting from the beginning is probably a good idea if he wants to play them all, if not then he should ask which one are the best and then play them in whatever order he thinks he wants to play them
