Following the publication of this story, Microsoft confirmed with GameSpot that Xbox Live has not been hacked.

"Xbox Live has not been hacked," a company representative said. "Microsoft can confirm that there has been no breach to the security of our Xbox Live service."

A hacker going by the name Reckz0r today claimed to have cracked Xbox Live, exposing confidential information for around 47 million users. In a note posted on Pastebin, the hacker claimed to have "brutally owned" Xbox Live a few days ago, but decided to publish the data today.

Writing on Twitter, Reckz0r said Microsoft stores its passwords in a plaintext format. This person described the disbanded hacking group Lulzsec as "friends."

A Microsoft representative has told GameSpot to expect comment from the company shortly.

The hacking claims come just two days after Microsoft announced its next-generation platform, the Xbox One.

Strong sales of the 3DS role-playing game Fire Emblem: Awakening have helped save the 22-year-old series from outright cancellation, the game's producer has said. In an interview with Spanish magazine Hobby Consola (via the Serenes Forest forums), Yamagami said that Nintendo told developer Intelligent Systems that diminishing series sales could have made Fire Emblem: Awakening the last entry in the series.

"No doubt. Truth be told, [series] sales are dropping," said Yamagami. "The sales manager of Nintendo, Mr. Hatano, told us that this could be the last Fire Emblem. Due to this progressive descend on sales, they told us that if the sales of this episode stayed below 250,000 copies, we'd stop working on the saga."

"I remember when I came back from the meeting," continued Yamagami, "and told the team 'my God, what are we gonna do?! The end has come!' Our reaction was clear: if this was going to be the last Fire Emblem, we had to put [in] everything we always wanted to include."

Nintendo hasn't formally announced whether there will be a follow-up to Fire Emblem: Awakening but previously stated that the game has sold over 240,000 copies in North America alone. When Fire Emblem launched in the UK, its limited-edition hardware bundle led to a 49 percent increase in 3DS sales.

The Xbox One will support 3D and 4K, Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has confirmed. Asked in a recent Yahoo Q&A session if the next-generation platform would support the video options, Hryb said, "Indeed. Xbox One supports both 3D and 4K." Neither feature was discussed during the Xbox One reveal event on Tuesday. Current-generation platforms like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 support 3D already.

4K's official name is Ultra HD. It is being touted as the next version of high definition and aims to replace 1080i/p as the highest-resolution signal available for video content.

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will also support 3D and 4K. At the platform's announcement in February, Sony explained that the PS4 will support 4K output, but only for content like photos and videos, not games.

Nintendo will not have a traditional Electronic Entertainment Expo media briefing this year, but the company will hold a Nintendo Direct briefing during the show on June 11, the Mario maker said today. The Nintendo Direct, which is expected to give gamers more details on the all-new Wii U Smash Bros., Mario, and Mario Kart titles, will begin at 7 a.m. PDT.

The president and CEO of Square Enix's American operations has left the company. Polygon reports that Mike Fischer, who joined Square Enix in July 2010, left the company earlier this month. Fischer is now working as vice president of digital music and video for Amazon Japan.

Fischer has updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect the changes.

Square Enix is currently undergoing a costly restructuring, which recently contributed to its net loss of ¥13.7 billion (approximately $134m/£87m) for the financial year.

Former Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada also resigned in March after spending 12 years in the role, and the publisher has said it is unhappy with the sales of its AAA titles Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution, and Sleeping Dogs. Square Enix's Los Angeles studios have also suffered from job cuts.

Prior to his tenure at Square Enix, Fischer worked for Microsoft, Sega, and Namco Bandai.
