You are obviously not familiar with modern technology. Here is a short list of things that prove that a hard-wired connection is not necessary for data transfer:
Phones, Bluetooth headsets, wireless mice, satellites, wireless speakers, laptops (wifi), etc.
They could easily develop it to work using a technology similar to Bluetooth/ radio waves, having the distance to the machine be the determining factor on connectivity. I'm not saying it will be soon, but it is completely possible without having to plug anything in.

And you obviously haven't done your research into this concept. Yes, wireless data and energy transfer is possible, however, this concept was specifically designed with the receptor pad in mind. take 5 seconds to google it, it's really quite neat, but I dont see the practicality of this specific design. Lots of storage in a tiny leaf of plastic is cool, but the idea of a bunch of tiny, expensive and potentially fragile sticky notes doesn't sound like a successful business model to me.
