How it looks like to me in the political scene in Norway (My home) is: People in general are afraid of people with muslim backgrounds. Either in way of offending them, and thus giving them immunity to punishments, laws, norms that apply to anyone else here. And by god do not talk about muslims in political debates. Bringing up why immigration from those regions must be narrowed down into accepting only productive people, is a death sentence, and you're bound to be flamed down in media and in society.
