chardlz (02/16/2015) [-] Gun shows and stores are different in the function of getting a weapon. Assuming you're not a felon and you're of age (differs from state to state) it's fairly easy in most states that are in favor of people being able to own weapons. In Virginia, for example, I could go into a Walmart and come out with a gun 30 minutes later since I'm not a felon. If I were then I wouldn't be able to buy the gun at all (they do a background check in the store that in about 10 minutes automatically searches your name with all known aliases from any Federal or State database). In other states, like New York, for example (a much more liberal state) you have to go to the local police department and/or the city hall and obtain a license first. Then for each firearm you wish to purchase you have to go back, tell them that you want the gun wait a few days up to a month for them to tell you you can get it and then they put that gun on your little card that you have to carry at all times that says you can own a gun. Then you can buy it. There are also a lot more restrictions in some states as to the type of guns you can buy. Gun shows and pawn shops sell firearms with the same level of scrutiny as the minimum required which requires at least one person there to be an FFL (Federally licensed individual who can sell firearms) and they are allowed to, on a personal level, complete the transaction and background check required for you to purchase a firearm. On a side note, most firearms used in crimes are purchased illegally, without an FFL from friends and family members and gunshows and pawn shops combined are the cause of approximately 1.7% of the sales of firearms used in crimes.
