I'm almost always bored, but I'm also kinda lazy (this is a bad mix). I'm going to college for engineering.

sirquidam (11/24/2015) [-] Reductio ad absurdum, or 'reduction to absurdity'. You guys could argue all day long about what's impossible and what's not, you wouldn't get anywhere. The point is we don't know, we can't know until we find out in future what's possible and what's not. Because we're all still expanding our collective knowledge. It is possible that at some point in distant future, entire humanity could become omnipotent beings. It's just so beyond our understanding right now that all we can do now is imagine and guess. “The universe is big. It’s vast and complicated and ridiculous. And sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles.” #23 -
anon (11/24/2015) [-] That logic is retarded, I know every single colour in the world, yet I cannot see another colour can I? Knowing everything doesn't make the impossible possible. Or, alternatively, know that there's no way to make them possible. Except if you know everything, you know how to make the impossible, possible, because that falls under everything. Except if it's actually impossible. Because then even if you know everything it's not possible to know how to make it possible, since you just can't. When we're talking "literally everything", there is no such thing as "completely impossible". #24 -
anon (11/24/2015) [-] Yes there is, knowing how everything works doesn't make you able to make everything possible. You may know all there is to biology, chemistry, physics and your cells would still need oxygen to burn, that isn't going to change even if you know everything. #27 -
anon (11/24/2015) [-] Dude, nothing is impossible. If someone knew everything, they would know a way to prevent their cells from needing to burn oxygen.

anon (11/15/2015) [-] do you know more then people who voted this the building of the year? i doubt it. but really, do you?? I've never met them so I can't say that I do or don't, but they could easily know the exact same things as me and give this building that title based on different standards than I would. That title is voted on at the World Architecture Festival out of people who have nominated their buildings and given entry fees and such. Also, architecture and civil engineering are very different fields, with architects concerned with aesthetics and civil engineers concerned with efficiency. It's the difference between form over function and function over form. Hell, maybe I am wrong and I'm not realizing obvious structural advantages, but just because something is handed a title through subjective or objective judging doesn't make it an absolute truth. Are there any civil, electrical, mechanical, etc. engineers, some construction workers, anyone that works on massive buildings reading this that could please name some advantages and disadvantages of this structure.

| The large overhangs between supports would create large amounts of force on the individual blocks, and make it hard to build. This would make constructing the overall structure more expensive than other structures that could hold the same capacity. Also, all the utilities and traffic are limited to the ends of the buildings. While it may work fine on this scale, it's not something we could use consistently across a cityscape. but there are ways that this may be an improvement, especially since it may make it more resilient to winds (though i don't know, i'm not that kind of engineer). I guess practicality depends on what you're trying to optimize #71 -

Are there any civil, electrical, mechanical, etc. engineers, some construction workers, anyone that works on massive buildings reading this that could please name some advantages and disadvantages of this structure. That's a kind of stupid thing to say. Everything from aesthetic to functionality is increased through that design. Vertical and horizontal; space are much more optimized. Massive increase in green space. Integrated privacy through the hex design. Massively optimized electrical/HVAC/etc. systems. Aesthetics are increased, sure, but with functionality and efficiency you're always making trades. horizontal space on top of buildings is increased, so you can stick more plants on the roofs, but the max size vertically that these can go is decreased by having massive overhangs. Also if you build more vertically, you don't need to take as much horizontal space and, therefore the plants can stay on the ground instead of roofs. and while this design works great in this area, places with higher densities of buildings could never use this design. Building this is much more expensive than several vertical apartments capable of holding the same volume of people. It may be much better for cooling, yes, but things like plumbing and evacuation routes take a hit (as do with vertical apartments). it's all about determining what matters more to you, as making it easier for one branch of engineering might make it harder for another and i was just looking at it from the perspective of what i consider practical. I'm sure someone could calculate the maximum efficiency of buildings in terms of price, space, resource management, etc and this might come close for one, but it certainly isn't a convenient balance. But i completely agree with pokemonstheshiz that we might as well make it interesting, after all i said "cool but impractical". #17 -
anon (11/15/2015) [-] That there is COMMIE TALK! No but seriously, practicality should be lower on the priority list than comfort is we want an utopian future rather than a commie dystopia where everyone lives in stacked 5x5m blocks because muh efficiency. Practical can be boring. Your home is where you spend the majority of your time, why not make it interesting? #32 -
anon (11/15/2015) [-] I don't know, something like, I don't want to have all the neighbourhood to be able to see inside my home, and no, curtains aren't a solution if I want the sun light instead of eletric light. Fuck promiscuity. That's a problem with any apartment buliding. And it's possible to tint regular windows, that could be a solution
