That's... never going to happen. Light doesn't work that way. What 'may' happen is the somewhat more realistic light-saber-like weapon Travis uses in No More Heroes. Something that has an emitter at one end and something on the other end to stop the light from continuing onwards and maybe focus it back into some kind of mirror that would continually bounce the light back and forth between the emitter and the reflector thus creating a massively multi-layered beam of energy encased in sword-form.
It's still pretty impractical as the casing and all the components involved will need to be able to deal with the immense heat that weapon would generate along with the user but theoretically something like that could exist.
it may be more plausible and more economical to have a solid weapon that oscillates energy around it like a chainsaw does it's blades. Perhaps plasma or some other superheated substance. It would take one hell of a battery pack, mind.
Still, Science-Fiction has the addendum 'fiction' for a reason. One of the shittiest parts of science if realising how impractical much of what we've come to love in Sci-Fi really is.
However, as I ad justtocomment pointed out, science is good at finding relatively elegant replacements.

Doctor Michio Kaku is a theoretical physicist who has(or had) show where he went around explaining how we can make real life versions of sci fi stuff. He did an episode on the lightsaber.
Essentially, he drops the "light" part immediately. Within the first few minutes, he explains the issue with using actual light, in that it wouldn't just "stop" like the end of a lightsaber. Instead, he took inspiration from the plasma cutter used in metalworking. Essentially, a collapsible ceramic tubing with holes in the sides (think toy lightsabers, how they collapse in) and using the technology used for plasma cutters. It would his through the hair, it would quickly cut through solid metals (Quigon Jin cutting through blast doors) and it would be capable of most the feats of the lightsabers from the movies. The only constraint in the present is powering it, but he explains in the episode how he means to power it when the time comes.

In the extended universe it is stated that a lightsaber is a magnetically encapsulated plasma blade and there are other weapons that function similarly like blasters and fireswords. One of the things that annoyed me about that episode was that none of the "Star Wars fans" he asked seemed to know this.
