My 8 y.o English Bulldog has eaten 5 lbs of fudge (the good, expensive shit from a specialty fudge shop) in one sitting, probably a dozen chocolate bars, and a couple months ago two cups of 45% cocoa powder for baking. Vets are always amazed at how healthy he is. It just depends on the dog.

I got a friend that gives his dog one of those rectangular hershy's pieces like once every other day and the thing is still kicking at the age of 11 years.

It's actually a chemical called theobromine (Which is NOT cocoa), which is a lot like caffeine. Different types of chocolate contain different amounts of theobromine: It would take 20 ounces of milk chocolate to kill a 20-pound dog, but only 2 ounces of baker's chocolate or 6 ounces of semisweet chocolate. We don't know what kind of chocolate that this dog ate, but it only looks like his salivary glands are (temporarily) damaged.
