There is a lot of lore in the EU that has been labeled under the "Star Wars Legends" title now, and is considered canon alongside the movies.
While the EU in general is no longer considered canon, the creative heads at the new Disney Lucas Arts advised that they will be using the EU as a resource for upcoming Star Wars titles.
Most of the information concerning the construction and function of lightsabers and their components is still considered canon.

One thing that actually brought me some hope was they've technically made Darth Bane canon (through The Clone Wars show, and technically Lucas had came up with him through vague mentions in novelizations of the films, though even those may not fit the canon bill). Not his full story, necessarily, or appearance, but they got it to the point they recognize "The Rule of Two", AND THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME
We might even at least see someone like Kir Kanos in these new movies. Jar Jar Abrams pls

Which is optional/controlled. It could be a 30 ft sword and weigh as much as a spoon if you wanted

No, it's not optional. It's caused by the shit keeping the plasma in check.
You won't be having lightsaber duels without some degree of control over the Force because you need the extra strength it gives you, or you're fucked.

It certainly correlates with Feudal Japanese culture, where the samurai mentality was to finish fights as quickly as possible, with as powerful strikes as possible and as few hits as possible.
If I remember correctly, katanas are "off balance" by design. This means they can get a lot of more force behind one strike, much in the same way a machete does.
And to keep the argument "you're a weeaboo" at bay, I'll post swords from my ethnic culture, which are coincidentally the swords I prefer above else. Even if they look like pieces of shit and probably are pieces of shit.
(The sword in the picture is a daiwhe if I remember correctly. Thai sword used in the periods where the term "rama" was a normal everyday term. No, it's not ramen, rama is the term for Thai king.)
#34 - edgecutter (11/28/2014) [-]
Well that fucking explains why years ago, while I was attacked by wild jungle dogs (grew up on Thai countryside), after slashing them with a similar sword to the daiwhe, the fuckers didn't go down after one big hit.
Now I have an explanation other than "those dogs are tough, mang".
Amazing what adrenalin does to a creature. Goddamn.

Daiwhe, a wonderful weapon. It's compact and easy to use.
The katana would have fit into the "finnish as fast as possible" catrgory if their horrible balance didn't make them slower on the recovery than most swords.
Also, if they wanted to have as much power as possible, the sword would have been curved towards the edge rather than away from the edge, like a Kukiri, since it produces a hell of a lot more cutting power.
Fun fact, in the anime/manga Rurouni Kenshin, the main character uses a katana that curves towards the edge because he doesn't want to kill. In doing so, he is using a weapon much more deadly than the standard, Katana, if it wasn't for his insistance at using it's unsharpened side.
