Right... I see what you mean now. Could have been worded a bit better, but I can see your point and you're completely right. However, what happened to your dog sounds horrible. It's a real shame that they don't know better and that we are unable to educate them the way we wish, but it's nice that your dog is completely better though

People think that dogs have evolved further than wolves in terms of digestion and starch, but they really haven't. Dogs share over 90% of their mitochondrial DNA with wolves and although you can add artificially produced enzymes to their food, it will not work for them. Dogs need to be fed meat or else they will become extremely malnourished. Signs of undernourishment include the bone structure of their head being overly visible, the faded pink tone to their nose (although dogs can have many different nose coloring's) and their interest in food is based on the direction of their nose. Dogs must be fed meat because their bodies are evolved around the consumption of meat and so they are at peak fitness and well being when regularly consuming meats that they would consume generally. True, they are better than wolves at consuming a wide range of foods, but that doesn't mean that it is easy for them at all. Without meat, dogs are just as weak as cats without meat. Now, I know nothing about cats, so I can't comment on those.

TL;DR: Dogs need meat in their diets and aren't evolved well enough to consume a wider diet.

I think what hes saying is that they can eat some types of processed food that would be destructive to wolves. Like chocolate (in small quantities).
User avatar #13 - omninickk (01/16/2014) [-]
Well... Dogs CAN handle chocolate, but the odds of even small amounts is far too dangerous to attempt. However, I understand his point now, but my response is still valid.

What I tried to say was that dogs can handle an omnivorous diet. Total exclusion of meat is not a good idea, but they can handle stuff like grains. unless they develop an allergy. I have to give my 15 y/o golden/terrier/whoknowswhat benadryl every day

Chocolate, however, is still a terrible idea. I have a black lab who nabbed a 72% cocoa brick from the kitchen when we were cooking. We found the slobbery wrapper within minutes, and took her to the vet.

Some ipecac, activated charcoal, and a saline injection for dehydration later, she was back home.
she was puking bits gobs of chocolate and activated charcoal until 3:00 am.
Outside.
In December.

Pic related, it's the kind of chocolate bar.

Fahrenheit is based off the temperature of the human body. The original temperature standard was set as 100 degrees on average, but it actually turned out to be a bit lower than that.

Celsius, however, is based off the boiling and freezing points of water.
