Anime Gif Dump 95
Because of the gif and your comment I just saw it. I thought i was pretty good. I'm going to talk about what I disliked and liked, so let's start with what I disliked. To be honest, it sometimes felt like the plot was all over the place. Like midway through the movie, Ren suddenly goes back to Shibuya and wants to study and take entrance exams. Then he goes back to the monster world, and all of a sudden Ichirôhiko is evil. It's like... everything clearly had foreshadowing, so I guess I can't say that things just happened out of nowhere, but the scenes didn't really flow into each other well.
This movie feels like two separate movies directly in conflict with each other, the first being Ren getting to know the monsters and training, and the second being him having his identity crisis and dealing with Ichirôhiko's darkness (as well as his own). It makes sense, because that mirror's the conflict his character was feeling, but I can say for sure that the first half felt more enjoyable and interesting than the second.
And let's talk just about Ichirôhiko for a second. As the final villain of the movie, he was pretty lackluster. To begin with, his characterization felt really rushed. I feel like he was only made evil to act as a foil to Ren; if they had taken more time to give him more of a personality, show him having his own identity crisis (more than a 20 second flashback), and show him slowly becoming evil over time, I'd probably appreciate his character more. But nah, one second he was cool and the next he was just a dick. And what was up with his powers? First he has telekinesis, born out of his inner darkness, so you would assume that this would be the power he uses in the final fight. But then, all of a sudden, he starts teleporting and summoning whales. Like what? I get that the movie was referencing Moby Dick, in that Ren was really fighting himself (or at least what he saw of himself in Ichirôhiko) more so than the whale itself, but dude. Why would they even bring up telekinesis if he wasn't going to use it? Why didn't they just have him teleporting and summoning stuff from the start?
But as I said before, it was pretty good. The animation was obviously beautiful, and is a perfect example of how animation as a medium can be used to deliver a serious story. I liked nearly all of the characters, especially Kumatetsu. When he and Ren started arguing toward the end while he was fighting in the arena, I thought it was fantastic that despite all the changes he went through with Ren, he really didn't change much. This comment's been going on for a while, so to wrap it up I think I would recommend this movie to a friend, but it's not something that I would watch again. Or at least, if I did see it again, I would watch it up to when Ren goes back to Shimuya, fast forward to when Kumatetsu is fighting Iôzen in the arena, and stop after that. If you've managed to read this far, then thanks for hearing me ramble on.
