a ton of emphasis is on the word to mean "virgin"
look it up.
#47 - zeedeveel (07/01/2014) [-]
As someone who speaks in three Greek dialects, no it didn't.
User avatar #49 - kennyh (07/01/2014) [-]
Matthew 1:22 ("Behold the virgin shall be with child") uses the Greek term παρθένος (parthenos), meaning a virgin

obviously that did not happen, but the fact that the bible never refers to mary as a virgin in the original text is a myth.

I do know what you are referencing though, and there are passages of the dead sea scrolls that refer to her simply as a maiden.
#51 - zeedeveel (07/01/2014) [-]
Atually, as a user below said, the term they originally used was Almah which basically meant young girl of child bearing age.
User avatar #53 - kennyh (07/01/2014) [-]
the term in mathew is παρθένος.
just look it up dude.

I agree with you, that a lot of references to mary just refer to her as a young women, not yet married, but in mathew she is specifically called a virgin.
#54 - zeedeveel (07/01/2014) [-]
My mistake, I'd confused Mark and Matthew. On top of all of that, the rumors running around at that time chronologically surrounding his later years were that his father was a Roman soldier. Then on top of that, in Greek, Latin and Aramaic scriptures that have been found, the paternity of Joseph is specifically stated.

"Jacob begot Joseph, and Joseph, to whom the virgin Mary was betrothed, begot Jesus."
User avatar #55 - kennyh (07/01/2014) [-]
I agree there is a lot of contradiction and wrong translation going on.
That is what happens when you put together so many books, by so many people, written over such a long period of time.

then translate them a few dozen times.
#56 - zeedeveel (07/01/2014) [-]
And yet so many people base their very existence on such a shaky foundation.
User avatar #57 - kennyh (07/01/2014) [-]
And not just shaky but just blatantly wrong in so many areas, like the name of jesus for example.

I actually went to bible college a bit back when I went to church.
It was like they were teaching with their eyes closed, ignoring all the contradictions and blatant misinformation.
and would get FURIOUS if you pointed out any of it.
One person (professor, but did not earn the title) said "all because you are right, does not mean you are right"

then they throw around the old "well it is supernatural, you just can't understand it" excuse.
or the old, "god did it to test our faith" kind of excuse.
It was quite the experience.

I'm a software engineer but theology is my minor and I'm absolutely blown away by the fact that people can still look at it with a straight face these days. I don't mean to be one of the condescending fedora-toting Atheists this site so vehemently adores but I'm just annoyed by the fact that people don't look into their own religions.
User avatar #61 - kennyh (07/01/2014) [-]
I know. My family is still religious and every time they are condescending about another religious I just say "you know they say the same thing about your religion, they are just as sure that they are right as you are"

They can't explain to their kids why there are this religion or that, because they do not know, their parents were a certain religion, they teach their kids that religion, the cycle continues, they ask no questions, brain turned to "off"
#62 - zeedeveel (07/01/2014) [-]
I don't understand how a person can care so little for their kids... As a parent myself it's absolutely disgusting.
User avatar #64 - kennyh (07/01/2014) [-]
It has such an allure to parents.
How much easier is it to just say "god said listen to me, and to honor me is on of the ten commandments so...do what I say" than to explain to a child certain things.

That to tell a child "do what I say or I'll take you underground and torture you" is child abuse, but to say "do what I say or god will take you underground and torture you" is perfectly ok, is a mystery to me.

I know what it is like to, as a child, have a fear of an eternal hell if I did not live a certain way, and genuinely thought family members were going there as well.
Do you know how devastating that is to a child?
it is psychological abuse, plain and simple.
So you are right, it stems from not caring about your kids and is disgusting.
#65 - zeedeveel (07/01/2014) [-]
I was never Christian so I never dealt with it but I have to say that that is the most disgusting thing I've ever heard.
#35 - butakun (07/01/2014) [-]
Okay, but calling her a young girl implies extremely strongly that she was a virgin, given the historical context.
#37 - zeedeveel (07/01/2014) [-]
Girls were often married by the age of twelve and impregnated even earlier in that time so no, no it doesn't.
#50 - butakun (07/01/2014) [-]
Did some digging, and found that I was indeed wrong about whether the word for "young girl" used in this context actually implied virginity. Apparently, "almah" means (or meant) something like "young girl of child-bearing age who has not given birth yet, may or may not be married, and may or may not already be pregnant." So yeah, you're right about that; while it doesn't necessarily preclude virginity, it certainly doesn't imply it.

The thing is, the term "almah" was used in a prophecy in Isaiah and mistranslated (possibly on purpose!) by whoever wrote the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament when quoting that prophecy. The Gospels of Matthew and Luke pretty much explicitly say that Mary was a virgin (though Mark and John don't say anything about it either way).

I caught a Shiny Gligar recently, haven't trained it worth a point.

I can get you the details later, but... would you wanna buy it?

Pokemon caught seldom sell for anything. They have to be bred for competitive battling before they're worth anything.
