A lot of it is experience, either with music as a whole, or the music tech side of it; but don't neglect actually learning things like practical theory (Which chords sound nice together, how to modulate, phrase lengths etc. )

If you keep what you hear in your mind and split it into different parts, you can then find the notes or parts to produce electronically. Learning to mix properly is often the difference between something that sounds like you produced it in your home, or something from a studio. (EQ, Reverb, Delay etc.)

If you need any help with specific things, mention me or head over to the music board, there's a few people on FJ that REALLY know what they're doing but generally just lurk.

are there any free programs you would suggest for making music?
User avatar

I personally Love to create Pirate music to remind me of the bay around where I used to live using FL studio.

But if you're looking for a truly free program, LMNP isn't too bad. But the paid ones are SO much better.

Either Protools, cubase or FL studio for windows, or Logic for Mac. I personally prefer FL studio for electronic but it's not good for recording because it works with loops and samples. Cubase is pretty good and automation is hidden which is nice but I find FL sounds more professional as you have nicer VST's and more choice over them. You're also not limited to what you automate in FL. Protools is much better for recording gigs across channels though or when you're working with longer samples such as when you're recording.

In my case it's just that I don't know jack shit about the programs, like, I open Fruity Loops and I'm like "well, how do you do the thing now, like, anything, what can I do?"

What did you specifically struggle with.
#76 - zarhakkar (05/21/2015) [-]
I think it could just be inexperience, but I have a difficult time in translating what I hear in my mind to my computer. There's just so many variables to consider that I often end up losing what I had in the first place. Maybe I'm not doing it the best way. Idk.
For a DAW I use REAPER; trying out various VST's.
Generally, I wish I had better control over what I was making.
