The original version of this was effectively a slab of wood with sharp rocks (or metal, obsidian, etc.) embedded into the sides.
So yes, while it is wielded like a sword, it is effectively a club with teeth

I was just going based on the fact that it occupies the sword niche within the Aztec arsenal as they did not have any formal metal works to make true blades.

I'll take this with a pinch of salt, but I suppose I can't really say if the guy deserved his accusations or not.
But it all seems to have stemmed from a war between the Brits and the French where they were to choose a side to support, and her husband was executed by the people they were supporting. So I suppose I've answered my main question as to why she's a hero.
