i think its very good. i like the style you're going for and i love the shading effects.
the only thing i could could complain about is her collar it seems a little too simple compared to the rest. and the piece need a bit of tidying up.

Yea, I drew the collar the way I normally do. By normally, I mean with pencil and paper so it's typically more "Comic book" styled. Picture for reference. Didn't really fit with this "chibi" type of drawing.

I'm just trying to keep it to simple stuff at the moment though, because I don't want to discourage myself by aiming too high too fast. So I'm just looking for small, easy projects.

I just got my first tablet today, and I've been drawing a bit to get used to it. I'm using Gimp because I know it decently well, but I have a problem.

I drew a face, did the lineart and all that jazz, but when I go to fill in the hair, or any area, with a color, it's got this white border around the color in between the color and lines and it looks god awful. Any idea what's wrong?

yea the fill tool on gimp sucks
personally i duplicate the layer. then fill in the lower one and fill in the outline as well.
that gives a nice fill effect.

adjust the threshold on the fill tool. turn it too like 100 then see if it fills better

I've never heard of that, though I recognize the style. I guess I just didn't know its name.

Have any tips for using this thing, or getting used to it? Obviously I just have to practice a metric ass ton, but any other tips? It's really hard, even to make smooth lines it's killing me.

I drew a face, and it's soooo awful. Possibly the worst thing I've ever drawn.

what i usually do is trace images. making my drawing on top of it. useful to try to learn to do cerine styles and things.

what i found very useful was watching live streams and youtube videos of people drawing in real time. you can see what tools and techniques they use for various things.

also the program Paintools SAI is very good, it has a 31 day free trial (and its easy to find a cracked version if you want it for longer)

not bad, i don't think the pen sensitivity is on though (don't ask me how to fix that)

a good way of making straight lines is using the path tool. (you might need to click file stroke path)
