I actually know a guy who cuts cause he says when he doesn't he starts hearing voices in his head. He has some psychological problems and doesn't want the doctors to give him more pills than he already takes (which is a lot). Of course though this girl probably doesnt have such issues/

Uh no. Your body rewards itself with dopamine and serotonin. The infliction of harm on one's self, unless you're not fucking human, does not release these things.

It actually has been theorized that opiate deficiency may be partially behind Borderline Personality, which is the only disorder in the DSM to list self-mutilation one of the criteria. Apparently several studies have shown that opiates do not tend to effect patients with BPD the same way they do with "regular people." So pretty much the theory is that if someone with bpd takes pain pills, they wont get high, they'll just feel normal. Of course, much more research would be needed to confirm this, but it would also help to further explain the borderline patients use of self-mutilation for emotional regulation. There are many other reasons for self-mutilation besides that, though.
And as I believe I've mentioned previously, self-mutilation has been shown to be an addictive behavior that can even cause physical symptoms of withdraw is someone is prevented from doing it after frequent use.
