We aren't looking enough. Pretty obvious based on how nearly everybody is turning this into a gun control argument and not about the actual root fucking causes of the problems. Happens with every single amanda todd that happens, everybody just cries and cries but doesn't do shit about WHY all these teenagers are killing themselves.
And, guess what, the problem doesn't lie 100% in the fact that don't know the cause or the cure, but the fact that we have pathetic recognition systems in place and the social stigma surrounding people with mental illnesses.

We are looking pretty damn hard. I have professors that do some of this research. If everyone had unlimited resources, sure we could look harder, but that's not the case. It just comes down to how ridiculously complicated the brain is.

I know the problem isn't guns, it's the crazy people that use them. But you can't tell a person is crazy with a quick test. These tests take weeks to months and most likely won't work if the person is not helpful or cooperative. And as for that "social stigma..." 11 percent of the US is on antidepressants alone. That's not even counting antipsychotics or other neuroaffector agents. I doubt that many people would be willingly taking these meds if there was such a bad social stigma.

People would kill each other all the time, the people are much too irresponsible for everyone to just have a gun.

Maybe a taser, and hell, or something, but guns are much too lethal.
#212 - wilhamlin (12/16/2012) [-]
Knives are really lethal too, perhaps we should ban all knives.
Bleach can be used to make a bomb, lets ban the production and sale of bleach
A bag of water can be used to blow down a door and potentially kill some one, nobody can have water or bags anymore.
In the U.S. 26.64 people die from TV/ Furniture falling on them
There are millions of things that are dangerous and can be used to kill someone else, if a person wants to kill someone bad enough, they'll do what it takes
User avatar #216 - goldenpotato (12/16/2012) [-]
I never said to ban guns. I said handing them out like nothing is a bad idea.

If knives were handed like nothing, I'm sure that some people are gonna get into some bad shit.

The rest? I am indifferent, giving out free miscellaneous items couldn't really do as much harm as a gun or a knife.

I see your point though, I think. That the gun is not the problem, but people will go to far lengths; even without a gun, to kill should the feel the urge.

Alright, so let's say I'm wrong, and that we don't actually know what causes depression or how to treat it. WHY NOT STUDY THAT THEN? I'm sure that will save a LOT more lives than "hurr durr ban guns cuz shooting"
#264 - yaysuperduper (12/16/2012) [-]
Wow you are ignorant. We are looking. Just because you are looking for something doesn't mean you will find it in 5 minutes. You think the reason we haven't found a definite cure for cancer or AIDS is because we aren't looking?

so it's a psychology thing then. civilians wouldn't want to use them because they wouldn't be "as effective" even though it's enough.

There might be some that would be close to as effective. But just the fact that they aren't guns might prevent civilians from using them. Kinda like "bringing a knife to a gun fight"

Except for how that's complete shit, they ARE easily identifiable through behavior and they are fairly simple to treat. People would be surprised to find out that a LOT of their problems could be solved with one visit to a pharmacy.
#167 - yaysuperduper (12/16/2012) [-]
Yeah, unless you know what you are talking about keep your mouth shut. I'm actually in pharmacy school and have probably forgot more about drugs and diseases than you will ever know. Did you know that they aren't even sure what causes depression? There are currently 4 leading theories. Not so simple

notice that i put "etc." There are other forms of incapacitating people, which is all that you need to do.
#103 - yaysuperduper (12/16/2012) [-]
I noticed the "etc." Did you notice that I said "they" as in more than one incapacitating weapon. I used taser because that is the only example you gave. And yes, none of them that I can think of would be as effective at stopping a shooter than a bullet.
