Play as the Romans, and use the hammer and anvil manuever to start. Advanced tactics comes with knowledge of the units

basically just go for whatever one sounds the coolest to you and even if you lose a couple times, eventually everything will come together for you

its not as hard as youd think, its basically the management of civ with the strategic elements of the medieval style warhammers. Basically just manage your resources and remember your common sense when it comes to battle, like flanking, charging with wedge formation, spear over horse, sword over spear, archers are bitches but pwn everything, and so on.

The older ones are easier in my opinion, but the newest ones have all the updated systems. I recommend Shogun 2 if you like the Japanese history, Or fall of the samurai if you like guns. If you wanna try the older ones though, Rome and Medieval 2 are amazing.

rome total war is the best one has all the core mechanic and is crazy fun.

SR3 is definitely worth the buy, it's so much fun, it's like GTA but better.

Animal Collective, Foxygen, Fleet Foxes, and Wavves

I wouldn't really consider any of those indie rock, except maybe foxygen. Not that they're bad (animal collective and Wavves are two of my favorite artists) but Animal Collective never really had a rock album, fleet foxes are more folk than anything, and Wavves is way more rooted in the Lo-Fi scene than anything else

I really wouldn't consider most of the bands you listed indie. I'm sure you already know, but indie bands aren't on big labels, they're on small, non commercial labels. The Flaming Lips, for instance, have been on Warner Brothers for 20 something years. Warner Brothers is a pretty big label. Going by the definition of indie, Wavves is definitely indie. Wavves is on the label Nathan Williams created.
