Except marvel doesn't own the rights to a ton of their characters right now because they famously had to sell a ton mostly to sony to stay afloat in the 90s. Which is why you haven't seen spiderman yet although marvel did rent the rights to him from sony, as well as for a couple of mutants but they literally can't use the word mutants in the avengers because sony still own's it. Only my gues, but probably because it's mostly water. Not helluvalot to burn there and water conducts the heat away from the ball very well. So instead of heating up the area just surrounding the ball the heat gets transfered to the whole watermelon

It's organic.
Organics will always tend to win because there's only so much breaking down they can do before the nickel ball just ends up sittings on a layer of ash/carbon, which won't really burn away and is an extremely good insulant.
