Yeah, the thing with the 300 movie is that it's based on a comic book than actual history, hence why it's so out there. That didn't stop my Ancient Greek teacher absolutely hating it as a movie though.

Cyrus the Great did not abolish slavery after conquering Babylon. The idea that he did comes from a false translation of the Cyrus Cylinder that has circulated on the internet. The dubious idea that Cyrus was also a great pioneer of human rights has its origins in propaganda by Iran's Shah Pahlavi.

In truth, Cyrus enslaved Greeks during his conquest in Asia Minor.

You realize that the story of 300 is based on the Frank Miller graphic novel right? So all the embellishment and what not is really typical Miller work and not at all meant to be historical.

all greek city states were at war with each other at the time. But they did not all hate Sparta more than Persia. Why do you think Greece united? It's because they had a common enemy. They all believed in somewhat the same religion. They shared the same culture, spoke the same language ate the same foods. The only difference between each city state was their political views. I'm pretty sure they were all able to agree on the fact that they all hated Persia more than each other if they were to unite.

300 is a dumbass comic, nothing in it is from history, its as real as gotham city portrayal of new york.
User avatar #37 - thenewsherlock (06/30/2014) [-]
Firstly, you can't really say Sparta went to war with all of Greece. If you're referring to the Peloponnesian war then it was actually Sparta and allies versus the Athenians and their League, which in fact was an Athenian Empire which was oppressing smaller city-states.
Secondly, the Spartans allied with the Persians because they did not have the capability of defeating Athens by themselves. The Spartans did not ally the Persians out of a despise of Greek City-States. It was more fear than anything else. Also, I'm pretty sure you mean Athens when you say Greece had democracy because Greece was all over the place when it came to governments.
Finally, the Greek States only hated the Spartans when they installed the Hegemony, which was long after the Greco-Persian war. This was because they had to supply Sparta with men, not because of poetry destruction.
There were a couple things more wrong with your statement but I don't have the space. So while you're right about the slaves and Persia's poor portrayal, you're doing the exact same in your comment when it comes to Sparta.
#39 - xseargeantxpainx (06/30/2014) [-]
My apologies, I wasn't trying to antagonize the Spartans or anything.

I also don't have the space to provide alot of the examples wrong in the movie and historical portrayal, but at least you've given some good examples.

Thanks for the informative post.

The Persians were unfairly portrayed as over-the-top cartoon villains, but so were the English in Braveheart. Both films are still fun stories about people defending their homeland from invasion.

The Persians definitely did have slaves, by the way. Look it up.
#28 - xseargeantxpainx (06/30/2014) [-]
Slavery was abolished by Cyrus the Great after conquering Babylon around ~540 BC, which was around 60 years before the Battle of Thermapolae (300) took place.

The Persian Empire was in fact the FIRST empire to abolish slavery and also, I forgot to add, allowed women to work and get paid, and didn't have an established religion in their empire.

I'm not saying the Persians never had slave, at one point or another ALL civilizations had them, but the Persian empire had abolished it for the first time in history. And even before when the Persians did have slaves, these slaves more like indentured servants and they had as much rights as the citizens within the empire. Most other empires and later sovereign countries with slaves treated them extremely poorly. Hell, the Spartans would actually make a sport in killing slaves and use them for training by their young soldiers. Not that I'm disrespecting the Spartans, but their portrayal as being the "Age of Freedom" was just very inaccurate.

Also I know the films are just for fun/action, but there is the few very misinformed people who will actually believe in what they watch instead of what they read up on.

Just once i'd like to see a Macedonian Sarissa phalanx slowly marching toward a boxed in spartan line.
#25 - xseargeantxpainx (06/30/2014) [-]
True. The Spartans may have had soldiers with great military training but they had very little discipline.

The Macedonians were far superior in terms of their discipline and military skills.
