Our country kind of works like the EU, kinda not. We've got a Senate, where every State gets 2 votes, and a House of Representatives where votes are in proportion of population. Both houses, or a House plus the President, must agree on a law before it's passed. Within each House they've made up their own rules about how to make laws (to give a frustrating example, the Senate needs a 2/3rd majority to overrule a filibuster, which isn't anywhere in the Constitution, it's just how they work now), and when the Houses and/or the President come from 2 parties, there can be a lot of dysfunction, just like the EU I'm sure.

I wasn't trying to say that the way that Denmark does their education is wrong or that it sucks, just that the US system is difficult to fix, partly BECAUSE it IS so good (people are loath to change it lest quality goes down, or they dont get much for the money they put in) and it most certainly doesn't need an arrogant, ignorant Nordic guy (the OP) to point out its flaws in comparison to a completely different system while ignoring the differences between each. Both places have schools, and that's about where the similarities end.

I wouldn't expect you to suddenly love the US system, just like I'd rather not pay 40 percent of my money to pay for some other guy's education. Not when I've worked for my own. But that's okay. I don't live in Denmark.

Question 1: Yes, that is likely true.
Question 2: Yes, also likely true.
Question 3: Possibly, yes, but this is where the wheels fall off of your argument now that you've finally articulated it at this point.

For starters, there's the question of Americans wanting the government to provide free education. Is SECONDARY education at Universities something that American's believe should be the Fed gov't's responsibility? I doubt it, but even so, it's simply financially an impossible proposition.

Keep in mind, money doesn't grow on trees, and in order to send so many people to school we'd need a lot of money. In order to raise that money, we'd need to tax people more (no, moving money from jails to education wouldn't cover it, I'll explain in detail i a moment), which is something that Americans strongly dislike.

Consider also, the people who will pay the most money have already paid+worked their way through college without so much help.

Consider how well/poorly run this new system will be, including just how expensive our system of colleges is to maintain, along with how to allocate the finite resources of the this new pool of government funds to such an extensive system. It's all fine and dandy if you're giving funds to 3-5 schools. But what about 500? How about 2,870 4-year institutions? What about the 1,729 Community Colleges (2 year)? They together service roughly the same number of people of the entire population of all of the Nordic countries combined (24.7 million vs 21.0 million students as of 2011).

It's an insane __amount of money, likely not supported by the American taxpayer, not necessarily effective due to government inefficiency, and even then, for the money spent, what will the extra benefit really be? Not everyone can get through college for one, and will there suddenly be an improvement in the schools? If so, will it be worth so much money?

yes you are right.

I keep thinking in the small scale of the country i live en.
Makes me forget how large the us actually is.

"Now i'm sidetracking sry"
All this tho.
It makes me wonder if the vary large governments, like the american one, arent in fact vary ineffective organs of the global society.
This is just a postulation.
And i do know that america actually is a collection of independent states that collaborate via the federal government vary much like the EU.

I would actually say that the EU is much worse then the US gov as the comparable size of the different countries in the EU is so large that Denmark for example has almost no say when the EU suddenly decides to make laws and regulations that can potentially cripple the danish welfare and social security.

well i can ramble on and on about this an that but ill give it to you. you state your case well. won't make me give up my Danish views tho. i like it here in Denmark and i don't mind paying 30 to 40% in tax if that helps my fellow citizens, even if some of them don't deserve it.

And i guess you like it over there in the US.
I actually can't for the life of me figure out why we have to pick at this subject every so often.

So ill end with a message to all my fellow euro-fags.
Give it a rest.
We are happy. they are happy.

Live and let live, as some clever bloke once said.

disregard my post.

My memory must have been fussy cos some of that is complete gibberish.

did some research and it seems that the He3-He3 fusion that i have been an avid preacher of for so long might not be as fisable as originally thought.

some new research shows that anyways.
