Religions are the main connecting element to people. I'm not an expert yet , I'm just a student but as far as I've read, every single early civilization (and even the subsequent ones) are based on the same main pillars and one of them is the Religion. Since humans are humans, we've had an abstract thinking and a wonder of "what's beyong the physical realm". Religious institutions have taken advantage of that need in most humans of believing in something and have used it to connect people, to make people feel they belong to something. Soon, those institutions will give "permission" (for example saying "god wills this guy to be the ruler) to monarchs to rule, and that's how the first states are born I'm sorry if I'm not explaining myself too well but it's kind of hard to explain since English is not my native language . Is it a evolutionary step? I wouldn't say so, but it is a step forward to a more complex social organization. Without relgion and religious institutions, we probably would be still living in small villages of farmers.
