In all honestly I think the logic behind it is the same that was used for the Xbox duke controllers, the idea it may be more comfortable if your hands were fully extended and didn't have to suffer long periods of bending and strain. The fact is though this resulted in a device which shorter reaction times because of it.

They have an idea and while it was good, it just didn't fit the role it was trying to fill.
