I dunno. Yangchen had full hair from mid-skull back.
Maybe for women they let them choose.

What I mean is all airbending masters receive the same tattoos. You'd need to shave your head to get a tattoo done from your forehead to your back, no? Once it is complete, female airbenders have the choice to grow back their hair.

They said earlier that shaving is their own choice. I suppose they need to in order to tattoo though. She can choose to grow it back if she wants.

I think all monks male or female get the heads completely shaved for tattooing, and then the girls just grow it back after.

Metal bending is a matter of skill and training - like lightning bending or blood bending. You practice enough, you can do it. I will submit that Earth has far fewer day-to-day utilities when compared to water, but the same can be said about fire and air too.
Also air bending is the most useless. It offers so little advantage outside of transportation it would be a waste of a wish to get it. You can fly? I can launch myself off the ground with pillars of solid stone.
Water is by far the best for day to day use. Fire is fun, but its practical uses outside of combat situations is limited. I will concede that much. In the end, I'd still go with earth simply because of its resistance to the other elements.

What happens when you've launched yourself off the ground?

Form a comfy pillow of solid stone to break your fall?

Btw water soaks through earth and blood bending would almost instantly fuck you up

Because first off: there are only three water benders that can bend outside of a full moon. That isn't a skill that is taught - it's a genetic capability.
Secondly, I can either bring the earth up to meet me, or shift it into sand/mud for a softer landing I can manipulate. You also make sand-bending out to be some impossible feat - Toph was only blinded because the shifting sand messed with her, she was still very capable of bending the sand (which she demonstrated by launching sandwaves and the bison thieves).
And yeah, I think I'll be fine while I wait for your water to soak through the dirt I'm bending. I'm sure by the time it's eroded I'll have the disadvantage of being over a hundred years old.
User avatar #392 - zomitlu (07/30/2014) [-]
That lady taught herself blood bending so lol

Water benders can also bend mud so surely I'd just strip the water out of the mud or move the mud somewhere else

You clearly don't understand how powerful water can be when projected strongly enough

Except typical earth benders can't properly work with granules (ex: Toph in the desert). Bending stuff like sand requires a completely different type of skill.
#382 - oneupforme (07/29/2014) [-]
Toph uses the earth to see with. Since the sand constantly shifts beneath her, it makes it difficult for her to see, therefore more difficult for her to bend properly. The sand benders on the other hand seemed pretty adept with this environment since they lived in it and can actually see what it is they are bending at.
User avatar #384 - hydraetis (07/29/2014) [-]
Hence "different type of skill"/sand-bending. Different form of earth bending.

I don't think it's so much as them being a different type as much as being used to that particular enviornment.

It says you've mastered the element, which means we assume you can do everything that a master of the element in the series can. Earthbenders in the series definitely do this, they seem to be find as long as they land on bendable earth (I suppose they depress the ground as they fall, so in a way yes, they do form a comfy pillow of stone to break their fall, because they make the earth yield as they land just like a comfy pillow would.)

Fair enough - water does have its utilities, and healing is pretty damned useful. As for the open rock - asphalt and concrete are abundant in populated areas and very much bendable. Everywhere else is earth - sure there's a layer of dirt, but that can be compacted or the boulders beneath the layer of sediment accessed. Remember, Toph was able to detect a cavern below the city - so I see no reason I can't pull rocks up from 5 feet under the dirt that I can also bend.
#45 - wonderpoop (07/29/2014) [-]
I see your point with the earth, but Toph was able to locate tunnels underground because she was a prodigy and completely blind, learning to use her bending as sight since like age 6. I dont think an average person would be able to see/bend that deep, but I guess that comes down to skill. There is also no guarantee that you will be able to metal bend, as its said in Korra that only 1/100 earth benders can metal bend.

I feel every bending style has its use, just in very different areas of life. Water being the most useful day to day, while Fire and Earth are more dramatic but you have less opportunity to use effectively. Air is somewhere in between.
