Even small businesses could survive. Small businesses don't hire many employees. They may do some house cleaning though, getting rid of some of the lower quality people.

Its not really that easy to get rid of someone as far as i know. they could sacrafice some stuff to make room in the budget for higher wages, but it sure sucks for them if the job isnt worth what they have to pay.

Right. But I'd like to see it brought to law. McDonalds doesn't need $15, but low wage factory workers do. Same with office positions, and custodial.

I agree there. I just dont see why its up to the goverment. If workers want more they should seek it themselves through whatever means they have (strikes, company meeting, seeking employment elsewhere that pays an appropriate wage for the job, things like that) government cant and doesnt have pinpoint accuracy to say who requires a higher wage, so they do a blanket fix and raise everything.

What I mean is the minimum wage should not be across the board. Service work isn't full time (for the most part), and is relatively simple...so $15 an hour isn't necessary. When you have jobs that requires you to work 40+ hours, work with heavy machinery that can kill you, you should be paid $15 minimum.

It sounds like you are saying people should be payed based on the job they are doing and not on what they need to get from the job, Which i agree with completely.

They can also do it because the CEO chooses to be paid modestly. What I don't get about people who say we shouldn't raise minimum wage because it'll raise prices...but turn a blind eye to the wages of the CEO which also factor in. Businesses will adapt to higher minimum wage. The consumer won't stand for a price increase, so the board will have to be modest with their salaries to keep expenditures low and profits high.

This is true. It wouldnt hurt big companies where the margins are better. It hurts the small companies where wages are a big part of their overhead.

Staying with costco though. Even if the head of the company took home 1 billion dollars last year thats less than 1 percent of the gross. i doubt that would stop costco from being able to afford a 50% increase for the main workforce. Bumping it up from 3.68b to 4.8b. Still a very small percentage of the companies gross.

Well Minimum wage should be based on the type of job. Say service work at mcdonalds would be a low wage, while factory work where you can learn a skill, but you have to put more hours in, and could get hurt seriously, in such a job the minimum should be higher. Say like McDonalds always starts you off at $7 but say you go to work at GM, they have to start you off at $12 and then you can move up from there.
#296 - winternetz (05/25/2015) [-]
Im confused by what you said. Thats what already happens. The company sets the appropriate wage for the job. Now the government wants to raise the minimum wage so that a job valued at 7 dollars now costs the company 15 to accomplish.
