first off, Mercer was lucky to have survived that blast he barley did, and if that crow wasn't there he would have died. Secondly Heller was stronger and more resilient, because as you said it was just two guys pounding one each other. Mercer before the virus was a meek-ish scientist while before the virus Heller was in an advanced military corp. So he was much more physically badass, not to mention he was driven by his want to avenge his wife and to protect his daughter. And by the end game they were about the same mass wise as Mercer only really absorbed mass at the end when he ate his lackeys, where-as Heller was absorbing mass all over the place, and of other super infected. Mercer and Heller both started off as asshats of the higher degrees, the only difference is by the end Mercer was still an royal asshat, and Heller was less of an ass and just wanted to get his daughter, Mercer's sister, and get out alive. He redeemed himself and had more of a growth character wise.
