If you believed I've misrepresented Pitt, I'd appreciate if you could tell me what he meant. I understand the general sense of what he was saying (cars pollute, which damages the environment), that doesn't make the argumentation any less silly.
I'm not skeptical of global warming, but the fact that it will lead to substantially more harm than using automobiles. What people fail to see is that the automobile is just one step on a massive ladder. The economic prosperity brought about by cars lead to other technological achievements, which led to other technological advancements, and so on. As weird as it seems, we wouldn't have computers or space travel without cars. Just as we wouldn't have care without the train or the steamboat.
The gas-powered car will certainly be replaced in our lifetimes, or improved to such an extend that it no longer poses the same problems. But even today, electric cars are being used using the same factories and workers that made traditional cars. We will owe the technology that will save us from the effects of global warming (or reverse it, if Levitt and Dubner are to be believed), from the technology before it. And that include the Model-T.

You are correct about the straw man, but the environment is huge. We, as a species still can't explain everything our own bodies do, or how exactly our brains work.
How can we possibly think we can claim that we know how the entire ecosystem of the planet works? Sure pollution obviously seems like a bad thing, but CO2 was being released into the air long before we came around.
This is just what I think, so thumb however, but To me it seems climate change is an important part of what makes earth, Earth. Our one and only home. What we have been doing got the last 100 years may be speeding things along, we'd have gotten to the finish line regardless of our actions...

Woah woah woah wait a second.
1. Pollution sounds like a bad because it is a bad thing
2. Of course there was CO2 in the air before we burned fossil fuels but it wasn't to the ridiculously high, ozone destroying extremes it is now
3. Yes climate change is normal, but it's supposed to happen over the course of millions of years not a hundred.
4. Ecosystems are not that difficult to understand you learn about them in second grade! Plant grows, herbivore eats plant, carnivore eats herbivore, carnivore dies and returns to earth, repeat, now take that same basic process and apply it to the rest of the planet and there you go!
5. Finally, we didn't "speed it up" we destroyed the environment that earth spent the past couple billions years creating, we're like the little kid that in 2 seconds breaks the model airplane big brother spent the past week making.

I am happy you didn't attack me, but my thoughts.
It is my understanding that coal and oil used to be living things. So that means at some point in history that carbon was in circulation, so to say.
We are certainly undoing something that was done naturally, but who's to say another process not yet discovered or known wouldn't do that same thing.
Asteroid or meteor impact's were just a theory until 100 years ago or something, but now everyone, with a brain, knows it happens. A lot.
I say pollution seems like a bad thing, because "pollution," as defined by us, is chemicals found in nature, as well as some that aren't of course, like spent nuclear rods, so things like volcanoes and animal digestion and decomposition create pollution.
Don't get me wrong, we aren't helping. But I personally feel we are being incorrectly told, by well meaning people, that we are responsible for more than we can conclusively prove or know.
Thanks for allowing me to put this in text. Helps me understand better my ideas and thoughts.
