User avatar #55 - glamoiglia (02/29/2012) [-]
An atheist is not someone who "believes there is no god," but someone who does not have a belief in any god. I don't believe there is no god. I don't know if any god exists, and I am not rejecting the possibility, but I do not have faith in any, and that makes me an atheist.

Atheist is the adjective form of the Greek adjective "atheos" which means godless. Basically, if you can't answer "do you believe in a god?" with "yes," you're an atheist. Lots of agnostics are atheists, but just don't want to be called that because it can make them appear dogmatic. I wouldn't blame them, when atheists can come across as narrow-minded and condescending, and agnostic is a good middle-ground for everything I guess. But agnostics don't know, and atheists don't believe. You can not know and not believe, and you can believe and not know. There can be agnostic theists and agnostic atheists.

I happen to be an agnostic atheist.

Ah, fair enough.
User avatar #28 - Stalin (02/29/2012) [-]
I kind of let my mind pour out, so I'm sorry if I may have contradicted myself or confused you.
When I was talking about the "true Atheist" I was not trying to define Atheism. I should not have worded it that way. What I meant in that part was that there is this idea/propaganda/callitwhatyouwant that Atheists just attack other religions and think everyone but them are stupid. I should not have said "true" but rather "sensible" or "educated". I was only trying to separate the ignorant Atheists from the rest, just like there are ignorant Christians as well.

I didn't want to define an Atheist, rather separate the majority from those that tarnish our reputation.

Yet it's more mature than Family Guy... and I mean mature as in it doesn't resort to crass humor and crude jokes in order to get the desired results of entertainment. Why do you look down on it? Because you feel that anything that has bright, vibrant colors is automatically for children? Because you see that the name of the show, and the characters therein are ponies, that it is suddenly beyond your capacity to enjoy, so you demean others for enjoying it? Have we gone so far into our own self-images that we fail to acknowledge what we were as children? If we fail to keep an open-mind, all it means is that the social integrity of our culture will fail, yet people like you are still looking down on people like me who happen to find solace in jubilation and joy, friendship, sincerity, generosity, loyalty, kindness, and laughter. Can you really, as a human being, look down on someone who isn't afraid to go against the norm, whereas others like yourself are afraid to even consider change? Is this humanity? Are we really reduced to quarreling over animations, songs, and preconcieved notions about something we know very little about? This is sad, and all I ask is that you simply ignore it if you don't like it, and accept those who do.

tl;dr: go back and read it all, don't be lazy.
#29 - whofortytwo (02/29/2012) [-]
Because I saw enough episodes to determine for myself.
Also, people who go against the norm get crushed. The only reason there are Atheists is because Christianity was a somewhat peaceful religion at the time Darwin published his book.
True story.
User avatar #31 - lexarcommander (02/29/2012) [-]
You do know that Darwin was Christian right? And if you care to read his book at any point, right in the foreword, it talks about Darwin being upset that he discovered this, because it went against everything that he knew, and the church, which was a powerful hand in everything. The only time when Christianity was truly peaceful was when they were getting persecuted before Constantine allowed Christianity to thrive. Going against the norm is the only way for progress. I'm not saying that Ponies will lead to progress, all I'm saying is that by fighting over it, we are wasting our time and efforts on an unattainable goal for both sides. To use the cliche, it's an unstoppable object meeting an immovable force.

User avatar #50 - glamoiglia (02/29/2012) [-]
Evolution's not a religion, and there's no circular reasoning in it. It's an idea of what's going on with life on this planet based on VERY extensive research and collection of facts. There are lots of facets to it that all line up (such as carbon dating, argon dating, comparative anatomy, and genetics, etc. There's fossil evidence of common ancestors of life forms with DNA analysis of the separate species that shows the differences in their genomes based on their evolution.), while books like the Bible contain contradictions like "thou shalt not kill" and also have commands from God to kill certain people.

But it's whatever. People don't have to follow, and usually don't follow the brutal teachings from Deuteronomy and Leviticus, and as long as people prevent future generations from doing so, that's fine.

My main issue is the minority that is against scientific progress. They're not getting very far, but damn it, they're trying. It shows when people are familiar with the term "evolutionist," which shouldn't even exist.

Evolution is the logical conclusion based on a shitload of facts. Why should there be a term for someone that accepts that that contains a declension (ist) that is so often used with ideologies? There is no "evolutionism." There are people who acknowledge the fact of evolution, and people who don't. There's no "brownieists" that assert the existence of brownies, even though they're just as real as evolution.
#61 - whofortytwo (03/01/2012) [-]
False on all counts. There is plenty of evidence against Evolution, but schools are told by the government not to teach those. There are many who know of this other evidence and still follow Evolution, blindly. I'm pretty sure that's what most people call a religion.
User avatar #51 - glamoiglia (02/29/2012) [-]
Also, the world's billions of years old. And it's proven through other things than evolution, such as geology and chemistry.

Was is the key word there.
User avatar #33 - lexarcommander (02/29/2012) [-]
... Well he is dead after all, so it wouldn't be "is." It definitely wouldn't be "will be" either. So yes, "was" is correct. He died in 1882.

#81 - whofortytwo (02/29/2012) [-]
People hate me for speaking my mind. What does that mean?
User avatar #83 - lexarcommander (02/29/2012) [-]
That means that either people don't take the lesson away from events, or they're just bandwagoning... in my own opinion...
User avatar #40 - chiefboss (02/29/2012) [-]
yeah, but there are too many haters out in the world i think we need more bronies in the world. It seems to me like everyone hates anyone that isn't like themselves.

User avatar #42 - runtz (02/29/2012) [-]
Wouldn't more bronies equal more haters?
User avatar #51 - lexarcommander (02/29/2012) [-]
Not necessarily, seeing as there the population of the planet is finite, it as to stop somewhere, and if you convert enough people to bronism, then there will be no one left to hate. But I can see where you're coming from. It's kinda like supply and demand, more haters are produced in accordance with how many people are required to be hated.
User avatar #44 - chiefboss (02/29/2012) [-]
Why would you think that?
User avatar #49 - runtz (02/29/2012) [-]
Well you're kinda being hypocritic saying that ". It seems to me like everyone hates anyone that isn't like themselves. " Then why do we need more bronies? I'm fine being the way I am neutral and all, but when I see people bragging about it, it kinda ticks me off a tad. Also, I always wondered if Bronies are about love and tolerance why I always get thumbed down if I say anything concerning both parties and maybe make one bad statement.

#63 - chiefboss (02/29/2012) [-]
oh i was speaking in general not just about the bronies and the bronie haters so it wasn't hypocritical and i'm sorry that you get thumbed down but you must understand that we don't even instigate the arguments so when they roll in hating and you try to sit the fence we both mark you as someone on the other side of the argument.
User avatar #66 - runtz (02/29/2012) [-]
Fair enough, you pose a valid argument. Glad no one got hurt and we didn't end up in a shitstorm.
User avatar #53 - lexarcommander (02/29/2012) [-]
That's only some of us, I thumbed you up when I saw that, I apologize for that.
User avatar #57 - runtz (02/29/2012) [-]
No problem bro.
User avatar #71 - chiefboss (02/29/2012) [-]
