When i say lose value i was referring more to everything going up in price and people paying more anyways, not that the dollar itself is losing economic value.
#98 - thatonecommunist (12 hours ago) [-]
we hit the reply cap up there, so i'm responding here, the increase in minimum wage is less than the increased cost of living, nobody loses here, except the wealthy.
User avatar #100 - chuca (12 hours ago) [-]
I think you wanted to type that the other way around. You're saying that the cost of living increase is going to go up more than the increase in minimum wage, which would be worse for everybody. Which i should note isn't what i'm saying, i'm saying that the amount stuff is going to go up things are going to be roughly the same for the ones who work for minimum wage.
#102 - thatonecommunist (12 hours ago) [-]
working minimum wage will always suck.

increasing the minimum wage will make things better for the average person, and that is practically undeniable, as all but one of the top 6 countries in terms of HDI have a 10+$ minimum wage
User avatar #111 - chuca (11 hours ago) [-]
How will it make anything better for the average person? If anything it'ff make things worse. They get the cost of living increases without the benefit or at least as much of a pay increase as those working for minimum. Though really i don't see it affecting them much either way.
#263 - anonymous (8 hours ago) [-]
You're under the assumption that the relationship between minimum wage and the average cost of living is both mutually exclusive and linear. Neither of which is true.

More than just the minimum wage affects the cost of living. The relationship between cost of living and the minimum wage do not move linearly. If they did, then our current minimum wage would be slightly over $10.00/hour.

I don't have the time or energy to give you a full economics lesson, but you're assumptions are wrong, and you would know that if you ever sat through the first 20 minutes of your first macroeconomics lecture.

We have seen, over and over and over again, that minimum wage doesn't directly effect everyday costs.

Consider this;

In 2010, I could walk from my high school to the Sonic across the street and order a #1 with no lettuce, tots, and a dr pepper to drink. The total came out to JUST UNDER $5. I know that, because I went to Sonic every single Thursday and Friday to grab lunch between classes ending and working at my uncle's nursery, and used a single $5 to pay for my meal.

Now, in 2015, when I go to sonic, I have to pay $7.19 for a #1 with tots and a dr pepper. The last time the minimum wage was changed was in 2009. There has been NO CHANGE in minimum wage since 2009, but prices have gone up since 2010? According to you, minimum wage changes the price of the dollar and NOTHING ELSE, right? Then explain how prices have continually risen? If you say "Well, other things effect the cost of living too!!" then you can't only blame minimum wage for higher prices, and therefore cannot attribute higher prices solely to the minimum wage.

TL;DR - minimum wage ISN'T the only factor of higher prices, and it ISN'T the reason FOR higher prices. When you realize that, or, again, take any economic class ever you can have a legitimate conversation about minimum wage. Until then, shut up and sit down, all you're doing is spewing ignorance.
User avatar #265 - chuca (8 hours ago) [-]
Except i already stated i'm sure there are other factors. Comment #73, Maybe you should bother to read the argument and know what you're saying before you try to put someone down.
#59 - thatonecommunist (13 hours ago) [-]
Can you give any academic cites that agree with what you're saying?

because the economy tends to like money being spent, and this would increase the amount of money spent.
User avatar #61 - chuca (13 hours ago) [-]
As would the price of things being raised. And how do i have to prove it? Just go from an area with one minimal wage to another with a different minimal wage. Doesn't take a genius to see that when people make more money, stores charge more. Went to Florida, which has a minimal wage which is about a dollar or two lower than mine and everything was so cheap I thought some kind of special sale was going on.
User avatar #144 - mustardbater (11 hours ago) [-]
Well I once went to a place where the minimum wage was only 50 cents a day and everything costed a hundred billion dollars. Seeing as how we're accepting anecdotal evidence in this discussion, my claim is just as valid as yours.
#62 - thatonecommunist (13 hours ago) [-]
Do you want me to give you a list of countries that are counter examples?

anecdotal evidence is a logical fallacy.

Norway and australia, countries with huge minimum wages, score the highest on human development index.
User avatar #63 - chuca (13 hours ago) [-]
Those are those countries, I don't know how they work but that's how it is here. I wish it wasn't but that doesn't change anything.
#64 - thatonecommunist (13 hours ago) [-]
okay, those are the top two, i undersold it.

the top four have minimum wages in the 15$ mark.

then we get to america.

right after america we go back to high minimum wage countries.

We're the exception, not the rule.
User avatar #67 - chuca (13 hours ago) [-]
I'm not saying that's how the world works, i'm talking about America specifically. You're saying what i'm saying. What dp you want to to admit? America's fuck up that way.
#68 - thatonecommunist (13 hours ago) [-]
Tell me what makes america special?
User avatar #70 - chuca (13 hours ago) [-]
Apparently people are greedier here, i don't know. I'm sure there are people way smarter than me than can explain why we're fucked up this way.
#71 - thatonecommunist (13 hours ago) [-]
if you don't understand it, have no argument for it, why do you believe it.
User avatar #73 - chuca (13 hours ago) [-]
Because everywhere I go I see it. Especially in food. Something that costs five dollars here costs a dollar in places with lower minimum wage. On the other end of the scale I go places and they charge twice as much when the minimum wage is just a dollar higher. I'm sure there are other factors but minimum wage is definitely one.
#139 - mustardbater (11 hours ago) [-]
Bruh, write this down on your hand or something, ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE DOESN'T COUNT. Support your claims with hard evidence from reliable sources or fuck off.
User avatar #164 - chuca (10 hours ago) [-]
I'm sorry i'm not running from state to state taking pictures to prove what I've seen. Don't believe me, don't bother to argue.
#76 - thatonecommunist (13 hours ago) [-]
When more people have money, corporations can justify increasing prices.

The bad effects do not outweigh the good ones, though, as people can on average afford a lot more food because of the increase in minimum wage.

You not benefiting from it shouldn't be your main concern when you think it through, it should be the effect on the country as a whole, more money circulating = good.

This forces money to circulate on lower-end products, aka, the important ones, instead of going to things like yachts, which will never benefit you.

sure food COULD go up in price a little (however price cielings could be enacted to stop this) are you really going to keel over because of it?
User avatar #80 - chuca (13 hours ago) [-]
If i thought food prices would only go up a little, i wouldn't be concerned. But what i've seen if a couple dollars difference makes them halve or double the price than making it $15, which is roughly twice of what my area is now, than it's going to go up way more than a little. If that turns out not to be the case, than i'd love it because i'd be one of those benefiting from it.
#81 - thatonecommunist (13 hours ago) [-]
I can't find a correlation between food prices and minimum wage literally anywhere.

I think you just stumble into more highly taxed areas.
User avatar #85 - chuca (13 hours ago) [-]
Maybe that's a factor, but like i said they had higher minimum wages too. And i should note not all the differences are as extreme as i said, those are just the worst offenders. Also differences in minimum wage usually aren't even a dollar. Of course $15 is a lot more than any state has as it's current minimum. I find it hard to believe that stores aren't going to be jacking their prices, especially in the lower income areas, when people are making nearly or more than twice as much.
#86 - thatonecommunist (13 hours ago) [-]
perhaps it has nothing at all to do with minimum wage if the differences are so miniscule as you say?
User avatar #87 - chuca (13 hours ago) [-]
I don't see what else it could be, besides maybe taxes. And i never stumble into areas that charge more despite having lower minimum wages, except maybe high income areas which aren't affected by what the minimum wage is. This supports my assumption though that where there is more money, people charge more.
#94 - thatonecommunist (12 hours ago) [-]
I don't see the problem with people having more money
User avatar #97 - chuca (12 hours ago) [-]
There isn't, where are you getting that i'm implying that? I'm saying that raising the minimum wage isn't going to help the ones affected most by it if everything else goes up as much as what I've seen would imply.
#79 - thatonecommunist (13 hours ago) [-]
Oh, also, something i forgot, the places with higher minimum wages tend to have greater taxes, this is because of a general left-wing philosophy, not because of the minimum wage.
