Honestly, you struck out pretty severely the first time by having HOTD be the series your mom finds when as your first "reintroduction" anime. Hmmm...

First things first, start watching safer animes like One Piece, Trigun, Usagi Drop, Kimi no Todoke, or Darker Than Black. They have a rather low amount of sexually explicit content. So use these animes as justifications for anime is not "porn"

As for the anime convention thing. Honestly, I think its wrong that your parent wouldn't allow you to go to an convention. Its a public outing with people that share a common interest with you. Its an experience most kids your age should be having at this point. Best thing you can do you here is to try and find some information on the convention to confront your parent about in a professional, and non agressive manner.

Do your research. Find out all the details about the convention you plan on attending; the most important details probably relating to the fact that the convention is family friendly and at most may have a handful of 18+ panels that only people identified as 18 & over by ID and Badge Pass can attend. The most important detail to stress is that the majority if not all anime conventions are designed to be family friendly. You can trust me on this. I'm a now 5 year convention attendee.

God, my mom is exactly the same way, which is why I had to sneak around like I was doing drugs back when I was younger. Do you have your own computer? Hulu and Crackle both have a pretty large selection of anime that you can stream on your computer for free (with limited ads). I also read most of my manga online, and there's a lot of decent sites that offer them (mangafox for instance). Hope this helped a bit.
