Sorry, I still don't know what the difference between standard and modern is.
User avatar #118 - semilunarknight (11/19/2014) [-]
Standard is the current set and the 2 sets before it, one being a core set. which they are doing away with very soon.
Modern is everything from 8th ed up to the current format.
The reason they say you are playing modern is because sanguine bond along with extort (being the orzhov mechanic) are now modern and no longer standard, they phased out with the introduction of khans of tarkir
#120 - starlordoriginal (11/19/2014) [-]
ah okay, i've been building this deck for 3 years now (it's the only one I built and I constantly shift it around every time I play) so I guess I just kept some of the old mechanics and threw in the news ones I thought would fit well xD
User avatar #122 - semilunarknight (11/19/2014) [-]
That's not a problem, casual play is always fun. You could run it in modern as well but cards like sanguine bond, are often too slow, not always though.
Modern is pretty much a turn 4 kill format.
How long have you been playing?
#125 - starlordoriginal (11/19/2014) [-]
The reason Sanguine Bond isn't slow at all for me is because on my average turn I gain about 3 life, then if the game goes on really late and I get the chance to set up all my combos, I've once consistently gained 47 life per turn. With Sanguine Bond out, the opponent takes as much as I get.

3 years, I built a deck of every type I could think of and played 5 games with each. Milling was fun but I kind of felt like a dick, burn wasn't much fun because it took little to not thought for me, instant kill got boring quickly for the same reason, and so on. But the life gain deck I built was extremely fun! So I just kept adding on and adding one, and now about 95% of my nonland spells have some form of life gain.
User avatar #180 - semilunarknight (11/19/2014) [-]
Nice.
And yes milling is fucking annoying.
I used to play that combo deck for a while then I moved over to azorious.
I'm working on a W/R aggro for standard now. I was doing jeskai control but it was the first time I played control and after a few weeks I got sick of how slow the games progressed.
I play R/W Burn in modern.
Modern for me is a little more competitive but I mostly play for fun at standard FNM
#227 - starlordoriginal (11/19/2014) [-]
Are modern decks allowed in a FNM tournament?

If they are then I'm going to have to take out my King's Assassin because that'll be the only out of circulation card I have in there. If only Standard cards are in-circ, then I'm not gonna be interested in spending a ton of money every year just to go to tournaments.
User avatar #233 - semilunarknight (11/19/2014) [-]
There are modern fnm events and standard fnm events.
It all depends on what the host wants to do.
Either way its always fun

The clans only came out this year, you have clan cards, those are modern, aren't they? or am I mistaken as to your meaning?

I just recently got Sanguine Bond to go with my Exquisite Blood, and dang if it isn't annoying to the opponent when I simply extort them for one and win because of the looping effect.

Exq Blood: When opponent loses life, you gain life.
Sanguine Bond: When you gain life, opponent loses life.

So you hate it because it's not good in constructed? Wouldn't you hate 95+% of the cards ever printed?

no, each card has a place somewhere, a combo somehow, but in standard (right now) its a pretty weak card (unless you're running goblins, then its an okay fill).
