Funny, but if you read more the term Filipino is also Filipino to the Filipinos...I guess you need to work on your reading comprehension.

Yes, but if you wrote 'because I actually wrote this in tagalog' no one would know what the fuck you meant.

I think people would be able to understand based on the context.

Some, sure. Not all. No reason to use words you know your audience doesn't know when there's something else that works just as well.

Point being, he's probably used to calling it 'filipino' when he's talking to English-speakers because most people don't know what 'tagalog' is.

My grandmother was raised in the Philippines, and she says that Tagalog is just the main language or something like that. There are other ones, like Bicol.
Maybe those are just dialects. I don't really know. I am the whitest Filipino around.
User avatar #41 - thatoneiranianguy (09/29/2014) [-]
Essentially, both are interchangeable. Calling it "Tagalog" may be more accurate, but it is by no means more correct than referring to the language as Filipino.

Although Filipino differs from classical Tagalog, as Filipino borrows many words from English and Spanish, due the fact the Spanish and Americans ruled over the Philippines for a number of years.

My point was, votta is forming an opinion on something he clearly does not know that much about. Considering both can be used here, and he ought to realize a Filipino dialect of Tagalog does exist - which this dialect happens to be the official language of the Philippines along with English.
User avatar #68 - thelurkers (09/29/2014) [-]
Filipino here. Technically, Filipino is the language, Tagalog is the dialect. Even if we spoke in Tagalog, Kapampangan, Bisaya, Illongo, Chabakano, it's still Filipino.
User avatar #99 - professorballsack (09/29/2014) [-]
From what I understand, Tagalog is just a stand alone of a language.
I think Filipino is a mixture of Tagalog(majority) and a mixture of other dialects like Bisaya.

Close but a bit off. The filipino language especially the tagalog copied the Spanish language.
