I've been shot 4 times by a legally owned gun because the owner found me "suspicious when out on a walk with the dog". He went to prison for attempted murder, but if he actually had aimed better it wouldn't matter much for me.

What really scared me was when the officers talking to me in the hospital assured me that "it only happens from time to time", which means you can easily kill someone with a legally owned firearm just because you feel the need to. That's not something that happens if you don't have a gun.

Statistics show that you're more likely to kill someone in the heat of a moment than actually defending yourself against a mugger or home invader. It doesn't take a genius to know that if he's pointing a weapon at you first, the gun becomes pointless. If you don't use the gun for self defense, you don't need it. It just makes matters worse.

The gun doesn't become pointless, it could be you used to save your life. Like I said before even if they were banned totally, that doesn't guarantee that guns will not be present. I can tell you that if I ever had to use a gun, other than in my own house, I would think very carefully if I should use it or if the situation could be de-escalated. I find it funny that guns are your only connotation to murders. Fists kill more people than guns do. It seems like you have a negative association with guns to begin with, please have an open mind and research it. The problem with gun control is ... You are trying to make the barbaric people act logically, while the logical people will act logically anyway. It doesn't work that way. And it ignores the true causes of these tragedies. We live in a world where terrible things happen, most of which do not involve guns, so why deny me the right to defend myself? As much as we want to believe there is an answer to stop all this violence, ultimately there is not and violence will always happen. Guns are not the problem as violence has happened, and will continue to happen, as long as humans are alive.

I'm saying that revolutions would never be a possibility if the US government decided to shut the place down into a fascist state. Which is true. Others seem to think that a handgun or even an assault rifle would keep themselves safe from government forces.

I am for gun control. Looking at statistics, you'll find a lot more cases where unecessary murder has taken place rather than an act of defense, you'll see what I'm talking about. Impulsive acts, misunderstandings like the Trayvon Martin case, accidents, etc., it's not planned murder that fills the bill, which is what pro-gun nuts seem to think.
User avatar #559 - volleys (08/12/2013) [-]
Gun control is proven to not to prevent crime. More guns do not equal less crime. It has been proven time and time again. You are not looking at the whole picture by the way. Home invasions, rapes, muggings, etc drop drastically when guns are introduced by the potential victim, many times the mere presence of a gun deter criminals. So I can't use a weapon to protect myself for a thug/criminal? That may be your decision, but not mine. If someone breaks into my home, I will defend it which may lead to a dead criminal. Why not instead of assuming people will die and banning guns, arrest the people when and if they kill someone. Why should I be barred the use of any firearms for the potential act of a lunatic? You are proposing increased safety by limiting my freedom to choose what I see as the most effective way to defend myself and family. Banning guns does nothing to protect me. Criminals will always obtain firearms through black markets, law abiding citizens are the only ones affect by restricting firearms. It seems you have an illogical fear of firearms. Please, if you haven't already, go shoot some. Its fantastic fun.
