This is why I will never take hardcore drugs, sure it might be awesome on a good trip but if that nice happy-slappy trip takes a turn down "Fuck this" road next to "Fuck that" Boulevard I'll be starring down bugs bunny in his later "carrot crack" years while I'm just trying to find a place to take a shit.

You're still not getting it. Overall Population ISN'T A FACTOR. The fact that America has a higher population does not matter one bit. If one countries crime rate is lower, then that's all there is to it, that affects population.Per 100,000 people in America there are 4.8 Homicides. If we scale that up it means there are 15120 Homicides a year. There is 1.2 Homicides per 100,000 people in Britain, so if Britain had the same number of people in it as america. there would be 3780 per year. Do you understand now that population does not matter when you are talking about percentages and statistics?
User avatar #250 - volleys (08/16/2013) [-]
I understand that. It's a percentage, I know. So going by Wikipedia, US crime is at 4.8 per 100,000, Ireland 1.2 per 100,000. Meaning US has a 4 times greater crime rate, but the US is much more than 4 times the population of Ireland. In fact the US is 70 times larger than Ireland. So in essence the US being 70 times larger and only increasing crime by 4 times is tremendously greater.

-____-. No, crime rates are taken by taking the total number of crimes per year and then divided per 100,000 people living in any country. This is the most accurate way of comparing two different countries as it removes overall population as a factor entirely. We get the percentage based on those figures, not from overall population because as I stated before, that would be fucking dumb.
User avatar #248 - volleys (08/16/2013) [-]
I understand that, but that is not what I am saying. For your population being only 14% of the US, you would expect crime to be 14% of the US crime rate not 33%. You understand?

Well, for self defense, no one owns a gun here. It's a very, very small sliver of the population so for self defense, all you need is your Fists because chances are that's all the other guy is likely to have.
For home and family defense, everyone lives in villages here where you tend to know everyone else. People notice when random cars turn up at your house and people actually look out for each other. Plus most people here actually trust the police to do their jobs. If you want to call bullshit then go ahead. But our homicide rate is a third of the US's and Crime in general is about half.
User avatar #244 - volleys (08/16/2013) [-]
US population is 313 million while yours is 4.5 million, so 1/3 of our homicide rate is not very good as your population is slightly higher than 14% of ours, same for crime in general. Those numbers aren't exactly convincing. So what your telling me is a little old lady would be easily overpowered by a young thug and have very little protection. Our neighborhoods where I live are very similar to yours too, and as the US is much more spread out police cannot always protect you. I assume that could also be said about much of Ireland.
