I like to look at it from this perspective:

People like to moan about their lives!

I'm doing my Masters in Mechanical Engineering and even though the work can be difficult, it's actually really interesting. However, after 10 weeks of hearing about ball bearings and lubricated liquids, they have lost their innuendo. So be wary! In return, check out what some engineers can do in their spare time

It's pretty difficult to know if you'll really like it until you get into the EE classes. While you should definitely take credit for Calc AB, I would consider giving up credit for BC and taking it over again in college. EE is a ton of integration and you'll need as much foundation as you can get. My experience is that college teaches it at a higher level than AP mandates, so you'll learn more taking it again and get a nice grade boost in the process. AP Physics E&M will give you the closest thing you can get to the subject while in high school, but it still is not even close to the real thing. As for why people stay with it when they hate it: if you can't stand one minute of the subject, you probably shouldn't be studying it for a living. A lot of people do it because there is a lot of money in it and people look up to you for working in the field. But if you really want to do it and have the ability, go for it! The tech industry is a great place to be right now. Where are you looking for school?

Most colleges have a rigorous Engineering program [assuming they're a valid Engineering school]. For the most part, all your AP credits are good for is to get a head start with classes. Those credits should put you two semesters ahead in your Calculus and Physics classes, which can be a mixed bag.

You'll have all the harder classes earlier than everyone else [especially Differentiable Equations, the big sorter for the major], which means you can't exactly go to your friend down the hall to see if they can explain that crap any better.

On the other side, you can either have a relatively easy Senior year or have the option to take a semester to pursue something such as a Co-Op or internship, which can be a fairly large advantage to getting a valid job out of college.

Just a fair warning though, your first semester will be hell [regardless if you go for a refresher course or new math]. At first, you'll wonder how it can be so bad. Then you'll have three papers, ten hours of homework, and a midterm to study for appear out of nowhere. My big thing was being afraid of going to the bathroom without doing something productive, seeing as at that point any time used unproductively is taken out of sleep time... Which can be bad if you like to hibernate for 10 hours a day.

It's a lot of work, but it's well worth it. Even the crappy internships are pretty good pay, and you can do some amazing stuff. Look into Big Data Science, you might like it.

Although you could get out of Calc 1 & 2, I suggest you do not. Professors tend to teach odd methods, at least in my experience, which will continue into calc 3. The physics isnt too big of a deal to skip. although I passed the Phy AB with a 4, i still took Phy 1 at my school. It was simple kinematics in the begging, and ended with statics and momentum. as long as you have a grasp on those, go straight into 2, which for me was more about charges and magnets.
Depending on where you live, and your willingness to travel, I would highly recomend the University of rhode Island. As far as price vs quality goes, it was one of my top choices. Any students chosen for the engineering program the live on campus are placed into "living and learning communities" where all, or most, students in the building will be engineering students.
Food- all you can eat buffet style, quality pretty good
rooms- 2 to 3 person rooms (1 if youre really lucky) decent amount of space, newly renovated
Major party school. Its hard to go three days without stumbling across a party, and its hard to go a day without seeing someone smoking pot in public
One major fun thing to do is the twice semesterly humans vs zombies where the whole campus turns into a giant game of manhunt with nurfguns and zombies. (some one made a post outlining it a few years ago www.funnyjunk.com/funny_pictures/231904/Zombiefest/)
Good luck

Also, listen to this guy. He's got a good grasp of things.

I've got a couple of friends that go to URI for the Engineering program, they like it. I'm currently at UMass Amherst, but I'm probably going to transfer to WPI later on. They have too much bias in their higher level classes pushing people towards alternative energy, etc.

Might as well take Calculus again in college to make freshman year a review year.
User avatar #67 - vishnapalm (12/04/2012) [-]
Oh also if everyone hates it as much as they say they do then why do they continue to take it? Is it because of the job opportunities/stability it provides as well as the paycheck?
