That's certainly true. My Dad's wooden ships game is great. The game comes with little cards that represent the ships, but he built little miniature ships for it, complete with little cardstock sails, and fine detail painting.
Do you even want to guess what something like that might cost if they sold it in stores?

It's very well designed.
Basically, it starts out both the players write down their moves, then take the next turn at the same time.
Each ship has three different "health bars" representing rigging, hull, and crew, and there's different penalties involved for losing certain amounts of each.
You can board, and get tangled rigging, and other such occurances, too.
