Hey there! Me again.

Wooden Ships and Iron Men, as I was saying, is an old tabletop game about sailing ship combat.
I'm willing to bet it's a bit more complicated than WH40K, but it's fun as hell when you know the rules

Cool. I've kind of drifted away from 40k, and towards the Battle Fantasy variant of Warhammer. My biggest problem with tabletop battlegames, is that their infuriatingly expensive to get started.

That's certainly true. My Dad's wooden ships game is great. The game comes with little cards that represent the ships, but he built little miniature ships for it, complete with little cardstock sails, and fine detail painting.

Do you even want to guess what something like that might cost if they sold it in stores?

Holy crap that sounds awesome. Have you any pictures of the ships? They sound cool.

I suppose I could find some... I don't have any, but if I can find wherever the game has gone to, I could...

How does the game play? Is it well designed?

It's very well designed.
Basically, it starts out both the players write down their moves, then take the next turn at the same time.
Each ship has three different "health bars" representing rigging, hull, and crew, and there's different penalties involved for losing certain amounts of each.

You can board, and get tangled rigging, and other such occurances, too.

Awesome.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome.
Did you ever play Heroscape?

Can't say that I have.

It's pretty simple as tabletop games go. I'm sure you saw the commercials for it a few years back.

I haven't seen any ads on it. It could be because I live in Ireland.

oh, well yeah that might be it.

I had a Heroscape set, anyway. It was pretty fun, but way more simplified than Warhammer or any other tabletop game.
