Well, St. Patrick was never canonized, as that wasn't a thing for a few hundred years after he died.
If we're going on the myth (which I assume we are, because there was likely never snakes here), then he didn't lead a genocide, he converted the pagans by showing them the shamrock as a symbol of unity.

More likely, in a real sense, was that he managed to convert the High King, who gradually pushed Catholicism around the place until it took over. There was no genocide at all. Also, we've been coming "out from under the thumb of the pope" since about the seventies, when the convents got called out for their bullshit.

Ireland has a really turbulent religious history, going from pagan to Catholic and then splitting in two with the arrival of Protestants. People fought and died so that their homes could stay Catholic or Protestant, so religion is ALWAYS going to be an important thing in this country.
