your missing the point, it's not the art he was selling it was his name and his reputation, they bought literal shit from him just because he was a semi famous artist and during that period all the art museums were looking for the next Andy Warhaul who would spontaneously become famous from the random and unpredictable nature of abstract art and grow uber famous over night making all of his previous works down to the rough sketches he tossed in the trash worth billions of dollars.
This trend became popular for awhile and art museums were flooded with shitty abstract art in hopes that they would be the next thing however early abstract art's main appeal was that it offered a sort of contrast to the art of old, it was a little thing that when put next to a bunch of big things looked unique and special so when the NORM became random shit that looked like it didn't belong anywhere it lost it's appeal and people started look at the more complicated works again when they went to art museums leaving behind the burning embers of a raging inferno in the form of abstract art today, which is mostly just where artists that realized they don't really feel like working hard go in order to brood and poo in cans.

It's roughly 1,000,000 grams (or 1000 tons) a year. About three years should be enough to make that fat bastard.
