The 5th amendment protects him from being compelled to implicate himself in a crime, not someone else. The 5th amendment isn't a catch all to not talk to the police. If you know something about a crime that you did not commit, you don't have to speak, but you have no protection from being compelled to say it.

Being "compelled to say it" would happen in the form of being issued a summons from a court to stand trial and testify, where you would have to tell the truth or perjure yourself. So if the police were simply interviewing him he would not have to answer their questions.
