Except that when you look at trade globally, and not just with the USA, you will see that Euro, Yen and many other forms of currency pop up as often as the dollar.
Not to mention your dollar is actually weaker than the Canadian Dollar.

gold and oil prices when seen on the news, or within a single country, are measured by whatever standard currency is used in the area, north america, the dollar, in europe, the euro, japan, yen, etc etc.
Also, it is not the leading currency, the CANADIAN dollar, is actually worth more than the american dollar right now.
Really, the only reason that dollar is used as a standard internationally is because it is one of the simpler currencies to measure, simply a number and a decimal. And even then, you see Euro popping up just as much as the dollar symbol.

You know, I have nothing against the Canadians, but that kinda makes me sad. Good for them though you know. Glad to see someone doing well. =)

I think the worlds "leafing currency" would be measured by the purchasing power of the respective currencies.

The American Dollar, much like the British Pound Sterling, the Swiss Franc, or the Japanese Yen, is merely the most popular Reserve currency - currency that most governments/companies who can afford to do so hold in a reserve for use in international business, so as to avoid paying an exchange transaction cost.

The Euro is/was [I'm not sure if it still is in recent years] an emerging Reserve Currency - due to it's widespread use it became viable as a reserve option, though it's instability may have affected the willingness of countries to hold it.

You don't need to be nationalistic to see that the dollar is superior to the euro (less financial problems, oil- and goldprice is measured in dollar etc). And our mints are harder to damage which kinda symbolises the strenght of the American economy which is even in crisis the world's largest.
